About us

London Varsity Series Winners 2019 | Pride in Sport Accredited | BUCS South Eastern 2a

At UCL Women's Rugby, we’re all about having fun playing a sport we love. As a growing family of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes, there's room for everyone - whether you've never touched a rugby ball or you're a seasoned professional. With regular training, socials, matches and volunteering opportunities, we pride ourselves in supporting every member through their university journey.

We usually play in the BUCS South East League 2 on Wednesday afternoons, which the university reserves as free time for sports and activities. For those with other commitments or who want to get more game time, we also play in the more relaxed London Universities league (LUSL) on Sundays - these are a great chance for players new to rugby to get as much practise as they can. Our season culminates with the Varsity match against K*ngs

Not sure what rugby actually is? Here's a short video that covers some of the basics.

Want know what all the hype is about? Watch last years awesome London Varsity Series video here and our Welcome video here!

If you have any questions or would just like to come along and meet the team, join one of our Live Calls this week:

  • Wednesday 30th of September (12-4PM): join here
  • Sunday 3rd of October (10AM-2PM): join here

Who can join?

ANYONE!! (who is a student of UCL..)

We cater to all levels, from those who have been playing for years to those who have never even seen a rugby ball. The beauty of rugby is there is a position for everyone, so don’t worry if you don’t think you’re the ‘right shape’ for rugby! If you’ve not heard of rugby or want to get more of a feel of what women’s rugby is like at UCL then check out our socials - we like to keep our fans updated (especially via Instagram and Facebook) and we’ve got plenty of match and training content up there to help you get a feel of things.

As a club, we are actively striving to create a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone irrespective of race, religion, and sexual orientation. We work hard for each other on the pitch and look after each other off it. So, if you are looking for a new challenge, want to get fitter and stronger, or just want to make some new friends, then come and check us out!

What this year will look like

On the pitch

We all know this year will be a little bit different, but we are keeping up with the RFU and UCL guidelines so that we can train safely and prepare for the BUCS season (due to start in January). This will include face to face training sessions with our coaches, gym sessions that can be done on or off-campus, some home workout sessions for those doing distance learning, as well as an online community for fitness and rugby based challenges.

And off the pitch

In normal circumstances, we have the classic Wednesday night socials in the Union along with the other sports clubs, as well as other events throughout the term.  Drinking is completely optional, snacks are encouraged and it’s a nice way to get to know each other off the pitch and in the dry. Socials are going to be moving online for the first term as per the union’s guidelines,  but don’t worry we’ve got plans to keep things fun and make you all feel like part of the women’s rugby family.

We also have fundraising and volunteering opportunities for those who want to give back and expand their university experience, including some ‘in-person’ volunteering penciled in for term 2.

To keep an eye on our players' overall welfare, we have a wellbeing blog series that tries to cover a range of topics, with examples so far including getting back into exercise post-lockdown, imposter syndrome, and how to be an active bystander.

A Typical Week

First Term

As our normal BUCS and LUSL games will not be running in first term, our training sessions will be on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons at Regent's Park (right by campus!). Online material will be posted every week for our Active Remote Members and online training and fitness and sessions will be announced ahead of time every month.

Additionally, we'll have optional gym sessions in small groups for strength and conditioning, and online classroom sessions. We'll also be running online socials, like pub quizzes or Netflix parties and will host speaker events.

Second Term

In second term, we are hopeful that our BUCS and LUSL games will be happening - so we should have games on most Wednesday afternoons and some Sunday afternoons. Training normally will move to Monday evening and the Sundays we do not have games and out fitness sessions should still run as in first term.

If the COVID situation permits, our socials will be back to normal - with weekly student nights on Wednesdays, coffee sessions and our traditional dinners and awards nights. We will also be running volunteering and fundraising events throughout the year, but especially in second term as per the Student Union's guidelines.
