At UCL Women's Rugby, we’re all about having fun playing a sport we love. As a growing family of all backgrounds, shapes and sizes, there's room for everyone - whether you've never touched a rugby ball or you're a seasoned professional. With regular training, socials, matches and volunteering opportunities, we pride ourselves in supporting every member through their university journey.
We usually play in the BUCS South East League 2 on Wednesday afternoons, which the university reserves as free time for sports and activities. For those with other commitments or who want to get more game time, we also play in the more relaxed London Universities league (LUSL) on Sundays - these are a great chance for players new to rugby to get as much practise as they can. Our season culminates with the Varsity match against K*ngs.
Not sure what rugby actually is? Here's a short video that covers some of the basics.
Who can join?
ANYONE!! (who is a student of UCL..)
We cater to all levels, from those who have been playing for years to those who have never even seen a rugby ball. The beauty of rugby is there is a position for everyone, so don’t worry if you don’t think you’re the ‘right shape’ for rugby! If you’ve not heard of rugby or want to get more of a feel of what women’s rugby is like at UCL then check out our socials - we like to keep our fans updated (especially via Instagram and Facebook) and we’ve got plenty of match and training content up there to help you get a feel of things.
As a club, we are actively striving to create a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone irrespective of race, religion, and sexual orientation. We work hard for each other on the pitch and look after each other off it. So, if you are looking for a new challenge, want to get fitter and stronger, or just want to make some new friends, then come and check us out!
We’ve adapted our membership this year so you can get the best deal for whatever on/off-campus situation you find yourself in, everyone can get involved - no matter where you are!

What this year will look like
On the pitch
With everything back to normal, we can have face to face training sessions with our coaches (in line with RFU and UCL guidelines), gym sessions that can be done on or off-campus, some home workout sessions for those doing distance learning, as well as an online community for fitness and rugby based challenges. We will be playing BUCS games on Wednesdays and LUSL games on Sundays.
And off the pitch
We have the classic Wednesday night socials in the Union along with the other sports clubs, as well as other events throughout the term. Drinking is completely optional, snacks are encouraged and it’s a nice way to get to know each other off the pitch and in the dry.
We also have fundraising and volunteering opportunities for those who want to give back and expand their university experience.
To keep an eye on our players' overall welfare, we have a wellbeing blog series that tries to cover a range of topics, with examples so far including getting back into exercise post-COVID, imposter syndrome, and how to be an active bystander.
A Typical Week
Our training sessions are on a Monday night at Wood green rugby pitch. We have BUCS fixtures for Wednesdays and LUSL games on Sundays. Online material will be posted for our Remote Members.
Additionally, we'll have optional gym sessions in small groups for strength and conditioning, as our coach regularly posts fitness programs.
Our socials will be back to normal - with weekly student nights on Wednesdays, coffee sessions and our traditional dinners and awards nights. We will also be running volunteering and fundraising events throughout the year.
