Diwali is fast approaching, with the festival's main day falling on Sunday 8 November this year. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists, with traditions varying across communities. The festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, making it the perfect time for reflection, new beginnings and togetherness.
London is getting ready to celebrate with cultural events, creative workshops and opportunities for different communities to come together. So, whether you're looking to explore the capital's rich cultural scene, make special memories with your friends, or even find a home away from home here in London, there are plenty of ways you can mark Diwali this year.
Celebrate here at UCL
Start your celebrations here on campus with a Diwali Candle-Making Workshop, hosted by UCL's Asian Social Network and Lamorna Society. It's a chance to decorate diyas (clay lamps), make scented tealights, and meet new friends while you're at it. Alternatively, the Deepavali Dinner organised by Malaysian Society on Friday 6 November brings together students from UCL, LSE and King's for an evening celebrating South Asian food and culture.

Explore London's cultural celebrations
For a free day out, head to the National Maritime Museum's Diwali celebration in Greenwich on Saturday 7 November. From dance performances and storytelling to rangoli and lantern-making workshops, there's a lot to explore, with a lantern parade bringing the day to a close.
You can also visit Diwali at Harrods in Knightsbridge from 6–8 November, where colourful lights and creative workshops offer a different way to mark the occasion.

Experience the spirit of Diwali
On Sunday 8 November, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, also known as Neasden Temple, gives you the chance to experience the spiritual side of the festival. Visitors can admire its beautiful traditional architecture and join a celebration centred on faith, community and new beginnings.
For something more lively, why not check out Diwali Dhamaka, a student celebration at Outernet, or enjoy an evening of fireworks at the Harrow Fireworks Display.

Celebrate together
Whether you're making candles, sharing a meal or discovering traditions across London, Diwali is the perfect opportunity to connect with others and bring some light back into the dark autumnal evenings. So get together with friends, go along to an event, and make this year's Festival of Lights one to remember. Happy Diwali!
