We’ve worked with Students’ Unions across the Russell Group to submit evidence to the Treasury Committee’s inquiry into student loans calling for a fairer system for students and graduates.
“The current student loan system is too often confusing, costly, and unfair, with major changes made that can leave borrowers carrying more risk without enough transparency or support. Our submission argues that student finance should expand access to higher education, not undermine it.”
Anam, Students’ Union President
What we're doing
We are urging the Government to take practical steps towards a more reasonable system. That includes reversing recent changes to repayment thresholds for Plan 2 borrowers, so they better reflect today’s wage levels, bringing interest rates into line with CPI rather than RPI, improving communication for prospective students and graduates, and increasing public investment in higher education over time.
This inquiry is an important chance to push for a system that treats students and graduates with fairness. We’ll continue to make that case, and we’ll keep pressing for changes that reflect the real experiences of students at UCL and across the sector.
What's next
We'll be reaching out directly to MPs to continue pushing for a fairer system. If you want to get involved, contact your Education Officer, on [email protected].
