Welcome to British Politics: Join Us During Welcome Week

Starting university is an exciting new chapter. Whilst being a student at UCL, there will be plenty of fresh opportunities not only in your studies and social life, but also in the role you can play as an active citizen. At Students’ Union UCL, we believe that university should be about more than just lectures and seminars. It is also a chance to explore the issues shaping the world around you and to make your voice heard.

That’s why, during Welcome Week, we’re running three “Welcome to British Politics” sessions. These events are designed to give you a clear and accessible introduction to how politics works in the UK, and why it matters to you as a student in London.

Whether you’ve studied politics before or you’re coming to it fresh, these sessions will provide the tools to understand the basics, from how government is structured and decisions are made, to how students and young people can influence those decisions. You’ll also learn about the history and traditions that make British politics unique, as well as the current challenges and debates shaping the political landscape today.

Importantly, the sessions aren’t there just to inform you about the British political system. They’ll also highlight practical ways to get involved. That could mean registering to vote, joining a campaign, engaging with your local MP, or using your Students’ Union to push for change on the issues that matter most to you, such as housing and the cost of living, or climate justice and international student rights.

It would be great to see you there at one of the following FREE sessions (please remember to book your ticket via the link):

We are also excited to be hosting 'Politics and Pints: An Intro to British Politics' on Friday 26th September 16:00 - 17:00, Phineas Bar. Whether you're studying politics, just arrived in the UK, or simply want to know what on earth the Prime Minister actually does, this is your chance to get clued up. No jargon and no judgment, just good vibes, great conversation, and optional drinks.

So, whether you’re curious, passionate, or simply looking to learn more, join us for “Welcome to British Politics” during Welcome Week. It’s your chance to start your university journey informed, empowered, and ready to make a difference.
