TeamUCL has once again managed to defeat KCL in our annual Varsity competition…
let’s take a look back at what happened and the athletes that made it possible

Written by Clara Baltay and Laura Dell'Antonio

Day 1

Varsity 2020 kicked off with Weightlifting, who hoisted UCL to its first victory, winning by a sizeable 305 points

Climbing and Mountaineering were up next, reaching new heights with another massive 430-point win over King’s

It was then 3rd time lucky for UCL, with a comfortable victory for Swimming who won by 128-101, giving UCL a 3-0 lead over KCL.

The water polo matches were closely fought, our Women’s team narrowly losing but our Men’s managing to take it back with a win!

Onto the final events of Day 1: Men’s and Women’s Hockey.  Our Women’s team fought hard but sadly lost (still not the 8-0 victory like they managed over King’s last year though!) but our Men’s team went on to beat King’s 3-0, making the score at the end of Day 1 an impressive 5-2 for UCL!

Day 2

The morning of day two and our Fencers donned their masks and swords, and our Lacrosse players their sticks and balls and headed to their pistes and fields to compete. Amazing performances from all teams lead to a triple UCL victory from both Lacrosse teams and our Women’s Fencing team. Men’s Fencing fought hard but sadly suffered a narrow loss.

.

The synonyms for ‘win’ are running out, but UCL’s wins were far from over, Tennis smashing King’s 6 points to 0.

American Football followed Tennis’ lead and also conceded 0 points, giving us our next UCL victory, 18-0.

Day 2 was again finished with some Hockey, our RUMS teams inverting the Hockey results from the previous day with victory for our Women’s Team but defeat for our Men’s. The overall score was then at 11-4 for UCL (obviously).

Day 3

Sunday meant time for some Basketball, starting with a nail-biting Men’s match that was won by UCL by one point and in the last minute of play! Despite an excellent performance from the Women’s team, they sadly lost 38-53.

Seems Day 3 was a day for close ones – our Baseball team losing by one point in an incredibly tightly fought match.

Moving on from this unprecedented double KCL win, our Volleyball and Badminton teams pulled together and fought back with three more wins for UCL, with 3-1 wins for both our Men’s and Women’s Volleyball (very well coordinated!) and a 9-2 win for Badminton.

With Day 3 over, the score was 15-6 for UCL.

Day 4

Day 4 saw some more close matches, starting with Squash who, despite great performances from all players, narrowly lost 3-2.

Table tennis next and again, despite great performances also lost by only one point 11-10.

Taekwondo however was able to bring it back with a 3-2 victory for UCL, bringing the overall score to 16-8.

Day 5

Only one event to report on Day 5 – Netball! And it was not one to miss, UCL winning by a whopping 32 points!

The overall score at the end of Day 5 was therefore 17-8.

Day 6

First to 20 points would take the overall varsity win…was day 6 going to be the day we ensured the victory for UCL?

Cycling took us to a great start with a 23-1 win, and Ultimate Frisbee quickly following suit with an 8-6 win.

Sadly, the rest of the day saw the tables turn in KCL’s favour. Our amazing Athletics team sadly lost by one single point 225-224.

Rowing also proved tough, with the win going to UCL despite fantastic efforts from the UCL side.

Pole fitness saw another narrow 3-2 loss for UCL, as did Muay Thai who lost 2-1. Great performances from all UCL athletes that day, you’ll get them next year!

So no victory for UCL yet, with an overall score of 19-12, onto Day 7….

Day 7

Our RUMS Football and Netball teams started the Day 7 programme, and, as fate would have it, our RUMS Netball team took the 20thvictory scoring 32 points to 28 for UCL that meant that once again UCL WON VARSITY!

That was not it for the UCL victories however, with our RUMS Men’s Football team beating KCL 1-0. RUMS Women’s Football played extremely well, but unfortunately were not as successful and the win went to King’s.

Finally, Rugby. Both our Men’s and Women’s teams stepped up to the mark and we saw excellent performances from both teams, however KCL was victorious in both these matches.

Final score at the end of Day 7 was 21-15.

Extremely regrettably, the cancellation of the final Varsity events of Men’s and Women’s Football meant that our Varsity was cut short here. We hope that you are all staying safe in this difficult time & remember that on a more positive note WE SMASHED KING’S!
