What is SusCo, and why are we launching it?
The Students' Union UCL Sustainability Council (SusCo) exists to foster collaboration and environmental action across our student community. It provides a democratic space where students can raise and discuss environmental matters in monthly meetings.
SusCo works closely with Sustainable UCL to advocate for higher environmental standards in line with the 2025 UCL Sustainability Strategy. The council aligns with the Students' Union's mission to become a flagship for sustainability by embedding sustainability principles into all activities, minimising environmental impact, and empowering students to take meaningful action.
Join the Sustainability Council!
To join the council please fill out this form.
We are looking to hear your voice and your passion for this area of sustainability. Whilst we want to hear of relevant experiences, for example in activism, school or a workplace, we are ultimately most interested in getting a sense of who you are and what skills you have acquired, rather than reading through a list of companies you’ve previously worked with.
We’d much rather read an application with typos than one written by AI. So please use your own words as we will bear this in mind when judging applications.
A lot of applicants will often neglect to explain why they are interested in a particular task force, and instead only mention their interest in sustainability in general. We ask applicants to stick to a rough word count of 100 words for each of the two questions, but it doesn’t matter if it’s a little over or under. If you are applying for multiple task forces, then feel free to write a little more.
If you have any further questions please reach out to the Sustainability Officers by email - [email protected]
We look forward to hearing from you!
What are the aims of SusCo?
SusCo aims to create a space where our student community can actively engage in long-term action in key areas such as politics, banking, media, energy, and education to address the climate crisis and environmental change. It aims to not only influence our Union and wider University but also inspire broader environmental action beyond our community.
Monthly SusCo Meetings & Task Forces
SusCo will hold monthly meetings open to all students, providing a space to address environmental matters and discuss ongoing sustainability projects at the Union. In addition to these meetings, we are launching five student-led Task Forces to drive focused action: Banking, Political, Education, Communications & Outreach and Food Waste.
Banking Task Force
The Banking Task Force is leading a student-led campaign to raise awareness of how high street banks fund the fossil fuel industry. Through panels and workshops, we educate students and provide the tools to make informed banking choices.

Political Task Force
The Political Task Force is working to connect sustainability councils and student groups across UK universities. By building a united front, we aim to amplify student voices, influence university environmental policies, and push for stronger sustainability standards.

Education Task Force
The Education Task Force aims to integrate teaching about climate change and sustainability into the heart of all courses at UCL. It focuses on the importance of intersectionality, for example looking at queer ecologies, decolonialism and feminism. It holds regular events such as panel discussions, workshops and debates.

Communication & Outreach Task Force
The Communications & Outreach Task Force hosts regular outreach events designed to reach new audiences and increase the visibility of the Sustainability Council. It runs our campaign website studentsbankingforsustainability.uk and our media pages; find us on Instagram @uclsustainabilitycouncil

Food Waste Task Force
The Food Waste Task Force works with relevant stakeholders to reduce food waste at UCL sites. This involves strengthening its connections to local food banks, drafting and lobbying for accompanying UCL food policy changes and supporting the creation of a community fridge on campus.
