The Government will no longer proceed with the full implementation of eVisas from 1 January 2025, as originally planned, to make a smoother transition to the new system.
If you're an international student with a BRP that expires on 31 December 2024, and you haven't transitioned to an eVisa yet, don't worry.
Airlines and other carriers will be able to accept BRPs and EU Settlement Scheme BRCs that are expiring on 31 December 2024 or later as evidence of permission to travel to the UK, provisionally until 31 March 2025. This will be kept under review. Passengers will remain subject to the usual immigration checks and requirements.
So, if you're travelling home for the winter break and your immigration permission is still valid but your BRP/EUSS BRC expires on or after 31 December, you are advised to carry your expired BRP/ EUSS BRC with you when you travel.
What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is a digital record of a person’s immigration status. It can be viewed online and accessed by people and organisations who need to check someone’s legal residence, such as:
- Employers and landlords (using a ‘share code’)
- Government departments (automatically)
- Airlines and other transport companies (automatically or by using a share code)
