For every club and society, there were a lot of obstacles this year, both personally and on a larger scale (understatement!).
Having been a member of RUMS WFC for a long time now, I know that what made it so difficult for us was that within this club, we are a lot like a family. We love each other’s company and support each other throughout medical school (or any course), and having so many members far away this year, or close by but separated by lockdown, was really hard. My goal was to continue this atmosphere in RUMS WFC, especially for new members, where you know everyone you’re training with, and could go to any of them for help.

We created events where the new members especially felt they could get involved and get to know the club – online socials, fitness classes, and welfare events, a buddy system for one-on-one support and football training, and matches when allowed. Throughout this we also worked on our social media to keep everyone updated, with special features on alumni, pride in sport, and black history month, and our captain’s skills Sunday to keep people active during lockdown.

Since restrictions lifted, it’s meant a lot to be able to get back to training, playing matches, and now some in-person socials, and to finally enjoy some football after a very strange year. I’m really grateful to my committee and especially all my freshers, who gave their all to being part of RUMS WFC in a year where everything was set against them coming to university. I love you all - MIDDLE MIDDLE MIDDLE!!!
