Active Bystander Programme Delivery 2021
Thank you for your continuous support promoting and encouraging your students to partake in the programme. If we’ve learnt anything in recent times - it is, allyship and building a community that challenges bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct should be vastly encouraged and adopted. The Active Bystander Programme managed to exceed expectations by training nearly 10,000 UCL students in the past year. We are pleased to say the programme will continue for the next academic year starting this September.
The Active Bystander Programme will continue with an initial online module and an option to attend an in-person or online workshop. The two segments include:
Online Training: This will include key definitions, safe and appropriate methods of intervention, exploration of different scenarios and reporting and support for witnessed behaviour. The online training will be an interactive module hosted through our website. A short quiz will be taken by students at the end of the module to ensure students understand the key aspects of the training. The online training module is estimated to take up 30 minutes for students to complete. The module will be available from Monday 20 September on the Active Bystander webpage.
Online or in-person workshop: Once students have completed the online training module, they will be able to sign up to either an online or in-person workshop. The live workshops are an opportunity for students to practically apply the content learnt in the online module training and explore the scenarios and intervention techniques further. These workshops will be scheduled for 1-hour and students will book unto them individually. Consecutive live workshops will run from Monday 4 October - Friday 22 October. After this, sessions will be available once a week and upon request from departments. Both new and returning students will have the opportunity to undertake the online programme, new students will benefit from the full training module.
Actions for Departments
Just like last year, we have tried to reduce the workload for departments. Unless requested, there will be no need for departments to book specified slots for students in their departments to attend the training. We ask the following of department colleagues for this year:
- Provide a contact of a member of staff in the department whom we will liaise with the Active Bystander Team to ensure relevant joining information is passed on. This contact will also get reports of how many students from their department has undertaken the training, so that that can send follow up reminders, as necessary. Please provide your department contact for the Active Bystander Programme for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research students. If you remain the contact from last year, no action is required.
- Departments should include the Active Bystander Programme in their mandatory induction checklist and communications for new and returning students.
- The named contact should monitor the number of students who have completed the programme and send follow up reminders to their students, as necessary. We will provide regular updates of department engagement levels via email or Microsoft Teams.
- We encourage departments to promote Active Bystander Programme material throughout the year via their own communication channels. We will provide digital promotional materials to assist with this.
