What happens when the dead come back—but only for one month?
Every seventh lunar month, the gates of the underworld swing open, and spirits roam the living world, searching for food, entertainment, and a little recognition. This is Hungry Ghost Festival—Singapore’s eerie yet lively tradition where families burn joss paper, offer food, and perform rituals to honor the dead, ensuring they don’t return as vengeful spirits. But what happens if the ghosts aren’t satisfied?
Khim, a career woman who dies unexpectedly, wakes up in the afterlife just as the festival begins. Thrown into a strange new world, she meets a mischievous pontianak (Maria – a seductive, tree-dwelling vampiric ghost), an ancient, grumbling pocong (Dwi – a hopping ghost wrapped in burial shrouds), a lost and wandering hantu raya (Intan – a powerful spirit once controlled by black magic), and a hungry ghost (Nigel – a spirit doomed by greed, forever starving for offerings and tragic stories). As they turn the festival into a supernatural competition—who can collect the best offerings?—Khim struggles with unfinished business: her mother’s grief, her sister’s resentment, and her own forgotten dreams.
Blending dark humour, supernatural mischief, and heartfelt family drama, this play is a moving reflection on loss, legacy, and the stories we leave behind. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, one thing is certain—when the spirits return, they bring more than just shadows. They bring memories.
