The Undergraduate Anaesthetics and Critical Conference aims to encourage medical students to consider a career in Anaesthetics and Critical Care and provide them with an opportunity to hear from experienced doctors in the speciality. We hope to provide an insightful journey into the career pathway and the different aspects it entails.

The day will consist of talks, careers “speed dating”, a panel, and workshops. Below is a description of each activity we will be running on the day.

  • Talks: there will be three longer talks held throughout the morning, with topics ranging from HEMS and intensive care medicine, pain medicine, and education.
  • Speed dating: We will be running a careers ‘speed dating’ session, where students will be split into smaller groups and will have the opportunity to meet each anaesthetist or intensive care doctor and have a short conversation. This may include topics such as research opportunities, your experiences in the career, any opportunities, and just generally a chance for them to network with specialists in a field they are interested in.
  • Panel: We will be running an expert panel comprising of 4 anaesthetists, which will be an opportunity for students to ask questions about the career. It will also be a good opportunity for panel members to discuss various topics such as advancements in anaesthesia and diversity in the career, for example.
  • Workshops: We will run some small-group workshops simultaneously, giving the attendees a chance to rotate through the workshops to experience each one.
  • Airway skills workshop: giving attendees a chance to learn more about airway management and practice their skills.
  • Pre-operative anaesthetic assessment
  • Managing an acutely unwell patient (A to E assessment): we hope to make this a simulation session where students can apply their knowledge and learn how to work in a team to manage an acutely unwell patient
  • CBD workshops: This will be a doctor-led session to allow students to discuss clinical cases related to anaesthetics and critical care. It will be an opportunity to teach students about common or important presentations to help increase their medical knowledge. Some suggested topics are as below:
    • Anaesthetic emergencies
