Founded in 2012, the education charity Lauriston Lights is a summer camp for eleven year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds, making the vital transition from primary to secondary schools. It has been created and is run solely by current or recently graduated university students. The aim is to raise the aspirations, communication, character and intellectual skills of the children it works with to empower them for secondary school and beyond. It does this through a variety of innovative workshops and teaching methods, such as one-to-one mentoring sessions, Philosophy for Children, debating workshops, character education workshops, workshops delivered by external companies and individuals and a trip to a university town.
