The BTO is the UK's leading charity working with volunteers to improve our knowledge of birds through monitoring and research. This includes the annual Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), a joint project with the JNCC and RSPB. This survey monitors the population changes of 118 breeding bird species across the UK thanks to the dedication of almost 3,000 volunteers who survey their randomly selected 1-km square each spring.

The BBS is open to new volunteers at any time of the year although the survey work takes place in the spring. For more information on survey volunteer opportunities at the BTO, please refer to the following website: https://www.bto.org/how-you-can-help/take-part-project/volunteering
