Description

Can you sign in BSL?  Caritas Deaf Service works with Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing people of all ages to facilitate and enable them to participate fully in the life of the Catholic Church, sharing their own gifts.

An important part of the work of the Deaf Service is signing at Mass.

We are looking to establish a team of volunteers with a knowledge of BSL at Level 3 or higher so that more Masses can be interpreted or communicated in sign language.

Duties

Attending parishes in person, your main task will be signing the spoken parts of the mass.  You are likely to meet and greet the Deaf parishioners as they arrive and after the mass. The setup may vary slightly from parish to parish. Don't worry, we will explain everything beforehand.

If you have never been to a signed mass before or are not quite sure what to expect, why not come along to our monthly signed mass at Westminster Cathedral? Details are on our website or get in touch with Shell or Sarah who'll be happy to tell you more.

Who will the volunteers be working with?
You will be working in one or more parishes (as agreed with Caritas staff). Shell and Sarah will be your Caritas contacts for this role. Your main contact in the parish/es will be coordinated on an individual basis. Caritas Dear Service staff will be your ,
Training
We expect you to have BSL knowledge at level 3 or higher. No BSL training will be given. You will receive an introduction to the role to ensure you have all the information you need and both sides are confident the role is right for you.

Time commitment

Mutually agreed. When signing at any mass, the commitment on that day will be a minimum of 2 hours in person on location. You will also need to allocate some time to prepare in advance.

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.

Like all volunteer recruiters we work with, they have signed up to our service standards, agreeing to abide by our policy on partnership working to keep you safe and supported whilst you volunteer.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
