Middle Eastern Women & Society Organisation (MEWSo)
Defending and protecting vulnerable women from violence both at home and in the wider community, and helping them rebuild their lives through tailored advice, guidance and support.
Description

The lockdown restrictions, loss of income and security brought many challenges to the women we support. As a result, our service user base expanded and the complexity of issues we dealt with increased. In order to respond to the increased demand of support, we grew our one-to-one advice service, especially around domestic violence and welfare issues. Our Advisors have been working tirelessly and liaising with social services, police and solicitors daily. We’re currently looking for an Advisor Trainee with a background or current training around social work, advice, legal aid or currently studying a closely related field. This key volunteering role will develop the volunteer knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform advice work. As the training progresses, the volunteer will perform increasingly responsible work under the close supervision of the Senior Welfare Advisor.

Duties

The Trainee Advisor will receive on-the-job training and work closely with the Senior Welfare Advisor to perform a variety of tasks:

1- Assist the Senior Welfare Advisor in preparing one-to-one meetings with the clients and providing any necessary support to ensure that meetings occur timely and successfully.

2-Provide information to service users about resources available to them in the community.

3-Prepare reports, case studies, forms and follow-up correspondences if needed.

4- Provide support in identifying and analysing women’s needs and setting plans for resolving their problems.

We also expect the volunteer to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate dependability and abide by MEWSo’s policies and procedures.

Who will the volunteers be working with?
MEWSo's Senior Welfare Advisor.
Training
The Trainee Advisor will have an induction session at the beginning of the role to give her a brief introduction to MEWSo’s various services and campaigns. Then, she will receive on-the-job training and shadow our Senior Welfare Advisor to see issues and cases that arise in our work and how we manage them. Once the Trainee Advisor has observed our advisor for a while, she can start to take on the duties mentioned in this role description. The volunteer will always need to consult with the advisor, ensuring that proper advice has been offered to the client. The Trainee Advisor will also need to be present during MEWSo’s end of month Case Reviews as part of MEWSo’s ongoing support.
The volunteer will be supported along the way by the Volunteer Manager and will have regular check-in calls with her to make sure the role is meeting the their expectations.

Time commitment

Due to the nature of this role, we're looking for female volunteers aged 20 or over who can volunteer with us between 4-5 hours per week for at least six months.

Most of the work can be done remotely, however, the volunteer might need to attend a few face-to-face meetings at our Islington or Westminster office.
Application deadline

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.
