We are currently running guided walks to highlight local heritage and urban changes, with the goal of attracting both tourists and residents. The income generated from these walks supports the museum’s ongoing operations.
We are seeking for a group of 2-3 research volunteers to conduct a literature review aimed at understanding strategies that small community museums can use to generate income from guided walks, promote the walks effectively, and attract a niche audience. The volunteers will explore various methods and strategies used by other cultural organizations and museums to reach both tourists and residents, while also ensuring that guided walks remain accessible and sustainable.
Main Objectives:
- Understand Income Generation Strategies: Explore ways to generate income through guided walks without compromising accessibility for local residents. This may include implementing a pay-what-you-can model for those who can afford to pay, while ensuring free access for residents.
- Promotion Strategies: Research how other museums and cultural organizations promote similar activities, particularly focusing on reaching the right audience (tourists, residents, niche groups).
- Case Studies: Look at successful models used by small community museums (e.g., Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge) to engage audiences and generate sustainable income.
The project will help us develop a strategy to increase income from guided walks, promote these walks, and engage a niche audience.
- Conduct a literature review of existing research, blogs, case studies, and reports on how museums can monetize guided tours and promote them effectively.
- Examine methods for audience engagement, including pricing strategies, donation models, and promotional channels.
- Research and summarize successful examples from other small community museums.
- Provide recommendations on how best to implement these strategies in the context of the current guided walks.
