Newham Council Volunteering
We are a Council led programme with great volunteering opportunities on offer.  Working in collaboration with the Students' Union UCL Volunteering Service we're promoting specific volunteering opportunities directly supported by us within the Borough of Newham.
Description

Are you passionate about sustainability, climate action and making a positive difference in your community?

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support Newham's Recycling and Waste Prevention Team at a series of community roadshow events promoting food waste recycling across the borough.

As part of a major expansion of our food waste recycling service, we will be engaging with residents to help them understand why food waste recycling matters, how to use the service correctly, and the environmental benefits it brings.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in community engagement, environmental education and local government sustainability initiatives.

What We're Looking For

We welcome applications from students who:

  • Have an interest in sustainability, recycling or environmental issues
  • Enjoy speaking with members of the public
  • Have good communication skills
  • Are friendly, reliable and enthusiastic
  • Are keen to gain practical community engagement experience

No previous experience is required. Training and briefing materials will be provided.

What You'll Gain

  • Practical experience in environmental and sustainability projects
  • Community engagement and public communication skills
  • Experience working alongside a local authority team
  • An opportunity to contribute to positive environmental change
  • A reference upon successful completion of volunteering activities (subject to council policy)
Duties

What You'll Be Doing

  • Supporting staff at community roadshows and pop-up information events
  • Talking to residents about food waste recycling and answering basic questions
  • Helping distribute information and promotional materials
  • Encouraging residents to participate in recycling schemes
  • Assisting with event setup and pack down
  • Collecting feedback from residents where required

Volunteers may also have the opportunity to support wider waste reduction and recycling campaigns throughout the year, including:

  • Community engagement and awareness campaigns
  • Door-to-door information campaigns
  • Repair Cafés and reuse events
  • Local sustainability and environmental initiatives
Training
You will receive a PowerPoint with slides on the project and a call or a face to face meeting can be setup to go through any questions.

Time commitment

You can volunteer for us at a one-off event or support us during multiple events. The roadshow of events will take place for 6 weeks starting from 30th September. The events will be outdoor in public areas or in our libraries.
