Muslims across the world will be observing Ramadan from approximately 11th March to 10th April.

We spoke to TeamUCL members who are observing Ramadan to learn more about best practice for playing sport while fasting, and what sports clubs can do to support their Muslim members.

When did you start playing sport?

I first started playing around 10 years old!

How do you approach training and matches while fasting? What about during Varsity?

After years of observing Ramadan whilst partaking in sports, I have become accustomed to it and no longer feel the same struggles I did when starting out. Personally, the biggest difficulty is still the thirst, especially for such an intense sport like football which requires a lot of running. What I eat and drink during suhoor the day of a match or a training session is very important - foods like sweet potato and bananas are great, and many, many glasses of water.

Equally as important is to know your limits. If you’re feeling drained or dehydrated then it’s best not to push yourself and take a break/sub off. I’m going into this year’s London Varsity series with that in mind.

What helps you to participate in sport during Ramadan?

I believe fasting shouldn’t prevent you from doing all the things you would normally do, sports included. Trying to keep a strong mindset, and understanding that fasting is not a barrier is what helps me.

How can sports clubs support their Muslin members?

Firstly, awareness is key. Just being aware of your fellow teammates who are observing Ramadan and being respectful in that manner is more than enough. When possible, it would also be nice if some trainings/matches could take place after Iftar time.

Do you have any advice for students who are playing sport and fasting for the first time?

My number 1 advice is to know your limits. Nobody is forcing you or pushing you, so you shouldn’t do that to yourself either. If you ever feel drained/dehydrated, please give your body a rest. My other piece of advice would be to fuel up during suhoor. Get in all the important nutrients that will give you energy throughout the day/during sports, especially loads of water.
