We're super keen to make sustainability a central pillar of the Students' Union and UCL. Until recently students didn't have a group they could easily access if they were keen to work on sustainability. But.... We do now!!!
UCL Students' Union Sustainability Council (SusCo)
The Sustainability Council is the body through which we do nearly all of our work. We have five task forces and are recruiting in September/October. But if you're interested in joining at another point in the year then, just pop us an email and we can have a chat about how we can bring you on board.
- Banking Task Force - focuses on educating students on the impact their banks have on fuelling and funding the climate crisis and empowering them to take action.
- Political Task Force - spearheads the UK Students' Sustainability Council, uniting students and leading our national campaigns, e.g. Students Banking for Sustainability.
- Education Task Force - works to embed sustainability into the core of all UCL course with a strong focus on intersectionality, works with Fossil Free Careers and Sustainable UCL.
- Communications & Outreach Task Force - hosts events and runs our website and media pages (instagram @uclsustainabilitycouncil - where we share cool things we do and live out our influencer lives.
- Food Waste Task Force - works closely with Zero Food Waste to try to reduce food waste on campus and at catered university halls and pushes for a zero edible food policy in the SU and at UCL outlets.
Our main priorities for this year outside of the Sustainability Council are:
- UCL to divest from Barclays Bank, which invests hugely in evil fossil fuel companies, guilty of human rights violations and climate crimes, and also in arms companies, which support genocides and wars.
- Holding UCL and the Students' Union accountable to its ambitious Sustainability Plan 2025-2035, as whilst a net zero 2030 policy is a great first step, we also need to take proper action to reach this goal.
- Advocating an intersectional approach to climate action, e.g. connecting the dots between the global oil industry and genocidal acts or LGBTQ+ rights and climate change.
We believe change is possible. If you want to be a part of it, get involved. Drop us an email [email protected] or message us on Instagram @uclsustainabilitycouncil.
If you want to get involved in activism then Climate Action Society is a great place to start as well. We're active there too and if you email us or message and follow us on Instagram @uclcas to hear about what we're doing and what you can do to take direct action right here at UCL.
We represent you, so we want to hear from you! Get in touch! Get active!
