WP Tutors will lead on the delivery of our two in-school attainment programmes which are launching in January 2027; UCL Accelerate (Maths) and UCL Next Chapter (Literacy).
UCL Accelerate
UCL Accelerate is a 12-week in-school mathematics tutoring programme developed by UCL’s Widening Participation team. The programme is designed to support the attainment and confidence of Year 10 students through targeted small-group tutoring delivered by trained UCL Accelerate Tutors. Tutors will be assigned to one of seven partner schools, with each school nominating 20 students to participate. The tutoring is supported by high-quality resources developed by Maths in Education and Industry (MEI), which will form the basis of the learning content. Tutors will also receive training from MEI and the access charity The Brilliant Club.
UCL Accelerate Tutors will deliver personalised sessions to Year 10 state school pupils, supporting their understanding of mathematical concepts, strengthening their problem-solving skills, and helping them to achieve measurable progress by the end of the programme. Pupil progress will be tracked through regular assessments, enabling tutors to identify areas for improvement and tailor their teaching strategies accordingly.
Tutors will utilise resources, including tutor and student booklets, problem-solving questions, and practice exam questions, to enrich the learning experience. They will work with small groups of students at varying grade levels who are preparing for the Higher Tier GCSE exam, covering key topics including ratio and proportion, trigonometry, graphs, surds, bounds, quadratic equations, sequences and functions. Tutors are expected to prepare structured lesson plans for each session based on these topics. In addition to content delivery, tutors will create a positive and encouraging learning environment that boosts pupils' confidence in their abilities. As role models, tutors will exemplify the values of UCL and the Access and Widening Participation Office.
This role demands a strong understanding of mathematics, a passion for enhancing student outcomes, and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning styles.
UCL Next Chapter
UCL Next Chapter is a Year 7 Literacy Attainment tutoring programme developed by UCL’s Widening Participation team. It is an in-school tutoring programme, in which trained UCL Literacy Tutors will go into schools and work with small groups of Year 7 students on Reading resources. Seven schools across London will be taking part in this year’s programme; each school will nominate 20 students to take part. We have partnered up with the National Literacy Trust (NLT) who will be providing weekly resources, as well as tutor training from The Brilliant Club.
UCL Next Chapter is a 12-week programme.
UCL Next Chapter Tutors will deliver weekly tutoring sessions to Year 7 state school students. Tutors will help students develop a love of reading through exploring a variety of texts and engaging in practical and discussion-based activities aimed at supporting students in grasping key Literacy skills.
Tutors will utilise resources from NLT and follow a structured curriculum to enrich the learning experience. They will work with small groups of students and will be expected to prepare structured plans for each session using resources provided by NLT. At the end of the programme, students will showcase a final project to address the theme “what does reading mean to you” to the reflect the accumulation of the knowledge, skill and confidence that they have developed on the programme. In addition to content delivery, tutors will create a positive and encouraging learning environment that boosts pupils’ confidence in their abilities. As role models, tutors will exemplify the values of UCL and the Access and Widening Participation Office.
This role demands a strong understanding of the importance of reading, a good understanding of Literacy and its key concepts, a passion for enhancing student outcomes, and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning styles.
Who can apply?
Current UCL undergraduate and/or postgraduate students who will be studying during 2026-27 and will be on the UCL Campus. Please note that this role isn’t open to UCL alumni, students attending other institutions or inter-collegiate and study abroad students taking modules at UCL.

If you are offered the role of WP Tutor your appointment will be conditional on the provision of two references, and evidence of your right to work in the UK when you register with UCL Unitemps.
A clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate is also required. If successful, you will apply for DBS clearance through UCL Unitemps. Getting a DBS won’t cost you anything, but you will need to show ID documents.
