About the job

Filmbright Ltd is looking for a friendly and enthusiastic junior developer to help us develop Paletta (www.paletta.io), our video storage and media management platform for universities.

Paletta is an existing web application built using Python, Django, JavaScript and AWS. We're now looking to introduce some exciting improvements, including easier video uploads, better sharing and downloading tools, and a redesigned website.

You'll work directly with the founder in a small, creative and collaborative environment, with the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and gain valuable hands-on experience developing a real commercial product.

We're looking for someone who enjoys problem-solving, communicates well and is keen to learn. Previous professional experience isn't essential, but some practical programming experience would be helpful.

This is a paid, flexible, part-time opportunity, ideal for a UCL Computer Science student looking to develop their skills alongside their studies.

Job description

Job Description

We're looking for a friendly, enthusiastic junior developer to help us improve and develop Paletta, our video management platform for universities.

You'll work directly with the founder of Filmbright on a small number of exciting projects, helping turn ideas into practical improvements.

Our three immediate projects are:

  • Video uploads: Make it possible to upload multiple videos simultaneously, with easier tagging and organisation.
  • Client libraries: Improve how university departments access, share and download their footage, replacing the current shopping-cart experience with something simpler and more intuitive.
  • Website redesign: Help create a modern, attractive homepage and improve the overall user experience.

What we're looking for

  • Good knowledge of Python and ideally some Django experience.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
  • An understanding of Git/GitHub and databases.
  • An interest in web applications, design and technology.
  • Someone friendly, reliable and comfortable sharing ideas and working collaboratively.

Experience with AWS, PostgreSQL or cloud storage would be useful, but isn't essential.

What we offer

You'll gain hands-on experience working on a real commercial software platform, with the freedom to contribute ideas and develop new skills.

We're a small, creative business and value good communication, curiosity and enthusiasm as much as technical ability.

The role is paid, primarily remote and part-time (approximately 10–15 hours per week), initially for three months, with the possibility of extending.

We welcome applications from UCL students who are looking for practical experience alongside their studies.

How to apply

How to Apply

Please send a short, informal introduction to [email protected], including:

  • A little about yourself, what you're studying at UCL and your interests.
  • Two or three websites or web applications you particularly like, and a few words about what makes them stand out to you.
  • Any coding projects, websites or applications you've worked on, with links if available.

There's no need for a formal cover letter. We're interested in your personality, creativity and enthusiasm for technology, as well as your technical skills.

We look forward to hearing from you!
