International Welcome Week
Starting university is a big step, and moving to a new country to do it? That’s a whole new level of exciting (and, let’s be honest, a bit overwhelming). That’s why International Welcome Week at UCL is all about helping you settle in, make friends, and feel at home from day one.
We know how much effort it takes to get here too. You've been busy applying for visas, packing suitcases and saying goodbyes. So take a moment to be proud of yourself. You’re here, and a whole new adventure is waiting for you - you made it!
This week is full of events designed especially for you... here are some of the things we think you'll really benefit from:
- How to get set up in the UK - things like setting up a UK bank account, registering with a GP, what types of ID are legally accepted in the UK, and how to navigate day-to-day life as a student.
- Discover London - Discover the city through trips and tours, so you can make the most of London life (without breaking the bank).
- Meet new people at our speedfriending events
Save the date for...
London is an incredible city, and we're here to help you make the most of it. We've handpicked some of our favourite events happening this week to help you start exploring everything London has to offer...
If you're in the mood for markets, we've got a loads of organised trips happening across the week. We're heading to Spitalfields Market (home to everything food, art, music, fashion and more!) on Tuesday 16 September, and we'd love for you to join us. If Friday 19 suits you better, join us as we walk from Gordon Square to Camden Market - with over 1,000 local traders, this is a must-see in North London.
London has incredible parks throughout the city, and we're heading to some of our favourites. Primrose Hill is just a 40 minute walk from Bloomsbury Campus, with incredible views of London - great for picnics and hanging out with friends. Regent's Park, also close to campus (just 15 minutes!) is a classic spot for UCL students - join us as we walk over there on Sunday 21 September.
If you're looking for an art fix, join us on a trip to the British Museum - with a dedicated collection of eight million works, its filled to the brim with history, art and culture. But if you prefer being in nature, come along to UCL East to walk The Line - Public Art Work, an outdoor exhibition programme where everyone can explore art, nature and heritage for free.
To celebrate starting university, we'll be hosting several boat-parties on the Thames (watch this space for tickets). If you fancy keeping the party going, grab your tickets to the afterparty happening at Corsica Studios.
And if you're worried about making friends, don't be - we've got you covered. There'll be plenty of welcoming and inclusive Speedfriending Sessions taking place throughout the week, encouraging you to take a few minutes to get to know new people in record time.

We will be running sessions throughout the week to help you settle into the UK. Keep your eyes on the What's On calendar, your hub for booking onto all student-led and Students' Union events. Events will also appear below.
Join the International Student Network
One of the best ways to meet people and settle in is by joining the International Students’ Network.
What is a network, you might be thinking? A network is a community or group of students who share a common identity, interest, or experience, and come together to support each other, run events, and build a sense of belonging. The International Students' Network is run by international students. They host events all year round, including the International Festival, as well as a whole range of cultural celebrations, network mixers, and socials. You’ll find a ready-made community of people who understand what it’s like to be new here as an international student, ready to welcome you in.
You're not alone!
When you join UCL, you automatically become a member of the Student's Union. And, at the Students' Union, we're run by students, for students. We are here to help you feel part of the community, not just during Welcome Week, but all year-round. Find out more about who we are.
Remember, everyone around you is also finding their way, so don’t worry about knowing everything on day one. Remember, our Students' Union team will be on hand to answer questions, help you try new things, and take it all at your own pace. UCL is also full of people who’ve been where you are now and want to help you feel at home, too, so don't be afraid to ask if you need directions or anything else.
Your UCL journey starts here
This is more than just a welcome, it’s the start of your time at Students' Union UCL. So come along to our events, say hi to someone new, and don’t be afraid to get involved. Your journey starts here, and we’re so excited to be part of it.
