#Zero Food Waste
Zero Food Waste is a student-led project at UCL that aims to tackle food waste on campus. We redistribute food from where it is in excess to where it is in need: from UCL cafés to homeless shelters and a surplus food bank. These are namely St Mungo's Endsleigh Gardens, a homeless shelter, and Lifeafterhummus Community Benefit Society, a surplus food bank for community residents in the Euston/King…
Description

Volunteers pick up unsold food waste from cafes on the UCL campus (like Gordon's, Print Room, Student Centre) and transport it to our local charity partners, St Mungo's and Life After Hummus. Both are within walking distance but we also reimburse transport costs if needed. Volunteers are asked to complete a short training and your first shift will be with an existing volunteer. After that, you are free to sign up and run collection shifts alone whenever works for you!

Our volunteering takes place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in the afternoon/evening, with shifts lasting half an hour to one hour each within the timeframe of 3:30pm-8.30pm. If you are interested in joining us, please click on the 'expression of interest' button at the top of the sign up page!

You can also contact us by email if you have any further questions: [email protected]

Duties

Volunteers will be in charge of collecting surplus food from UCL cafes around their closing time and delivering the food to our partners on foot.

Who will the volunteers be working with?
The volunteers will be communicating with the cafe staff (and our charity partner) with support from the project leaders.
Training
Volunteers will be required to read through training slides regarding Manual Handling, Food Safety and Allergens and take a short quiz afterwards.
Shift instructions will be provided in the format of text and infographics.

Time commitment

The commitment to this project depends on your availability. There is no minimum commitment, and you will be able to sign up for a Wednesday/Thursday/Friday shift the week before. Each shift lasts around half an hour to one hour.

This is an opportunity offered by a Student-Led Volunteering Project. It is run by UCL students and supported and supervised by staff in Students' Union UCL Volunteering Service.
