Bright Futures UK was set up with the mission to support young people who are forced to take time out from education due to medical circumstances. Description

Evaluating the Impact of Programs for Young People Taking Time Out of Education

Bright Futures UK works with young people who take time out of education due to physical or mental health concerns. They offer a variety of online and in-person programs including befriending, mentoring, tutoring, and workshops. The organisation seeks to measure the impact of their programs on key outcomes for the young people they support.

As part of this effort, Bright Futures UK is looking for research volunteers to assist in finding suitable questionnaires that can measure the following key areas for young people aged 5-24:

  1. General well-being
  2. Academic self-concept/academic outcomes
  3. Social isolation/loneliness
  4. Feelings about the future

Requirements for Questionnaires:

  • Should take no more than 5 minutes to complete
  • Simple and accessible for participants (no sensitive questions, e.g., on suicidal ideation)
  • Free from copyright issues (open access for charity use)

This opportunity is ideal for students interested in psychology, education, social research, and/or youth development, particularly those looking to gain experience in impact measurement and evaluation.

Duties

Volunteers will:

  • Coordinate with the Bright Futures UK team to fully understand the charity’s objectives for measuring program outcomes.
  • Select one of the four key areas listed above and conduct a rapid review of available questionnaires measuring that outcome.
  • Present a draft report recommending appropriate scales to measure the selected concept, including an analysis of their pros and cons, and how they align with the charity’s goals.
  • Work closely with the Bright Futures team to refine the choice of scale and support its integration into the charity’s feedback forms.
  • Collaborate with other research volunteers to produce a final report, outlining the chosen scales, the rationale behind their selection, and the data that can be extracted from them to guide future analysis.
