Description

East London LGBT Seniors is seeking research volunteers to conduct a literature review on how self-identity evolves over time, with a particular focus on older gay men. The research will explore how aging can change self-identity, the challenges older gay men face, and the role of community in self-perception and well-being.

The review will be divided into two key components:

  • Scoping Review: A broad analysis of self-identity and aging across diverse populations, identifying common themes and research gaps.
  • Systematic Review: A focused examination of studies on self-identity in older gay men, framed through gender studies and LGBTQ+ perspectives, exploring the unique experiences and challenges within this group.

Findings will provide a foundation for future research and contribute to community-based initiatives aimed at supporting older LGBTQ+ individuals.

This opportunity is ideal for students interested in psychology, sociology, gender studies, LGBTQ+ research, or aging studies. Volunteers will gain experience in conducting structured literature reviews, synthesizing academic research, and contributing to meaningful community-led initiatives.

Duties
  • Meet with Bill online to discuss the survey results (Growing Older Survey) that inspired this project, and clarify the concept of ‘self-identity’ for the research.
  • Conduct a structured scoping and systematic review of academic literature.
  • Identify key themes related to self-identity and aging in older gay men.
  • Summarize findings in a final report to inform future research and community support initiatives.
  • Participate in discussions with stakeholders to explore next steps for research and program development.
Who will the volunteers be working with?
Bill Hopkinson, Director of East London LGBT Seniors.
