17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week is an anti-hate crime charity. They were established in 2009 to mark the 10th anniversary of the London Nail Bomb attack on the Admiral Duncan.
They are seeking student volunteers to conduct data analysis for a research project on evolutions in the UK Hate Crime Prevention sector, with freedom of information data obtained in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2025. The charity wants to understand changes in how police and councils are engaging with the National Week.
They have already conducted a comprehensive freedom of information (FOI) research into the infrastructure of the hate crime sector from councils and police across the UK, in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2025. The students’ main responsibilities will be data analysis.
- The main goal for the volunteers will be to analyse the FOI responses using Airtable
- First, identifying gaps in responses
- Next, analysing the available responses – specifically, extracting temporal and spatial (across UK) patterns in the structure of the hate crime sector
- Have there been any significant changes following the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in government approaches to tackling hate crime
- This includes analysing responses to eleven primary questions (existence of plans and strategies, budget devoted to hate crime etc.) and participation in National Hate Crime Awareness Week
- Finally, producing a summary report of findings
Provisional timeline:
-January – familiarise and get access to the data, identifying key gaps
-February – data analysis
-March – draft initial findings report
-April – participate in events to share findings with the government, police and councils, key partners and communities affected by hate crime
