Club Kali Network - Where East Meets West Project
Our 'Where East Meets West' project documents and showcases the rich history of the Club Kali from its inception in 1995 to the present day.
Description

Club Kali, a historic safe space for the South Asian LGBTQ+ community, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of outputs including events, oral history interviews, a podcast series, archive creation and an exhibition at Islington Museum. These events honour the club’s role in fostering inclusion, resilience, and community over the decades.

We are seeking 3-4 students to work on curation for our exhibition at Islington Museum. This is an exciting opportunity to work directly with oral histories and archives, bring together a cohesive exhibition and document the rich history of the South Asian LGBTQ+ community. If students are interested, they are also welcome to play an active role in the exhibition launch in August 2025.

Duties
  • Sort and catalogue oral histories and archival material related to the South Asian LGBTQ+ community.
  • Bring together a cohesive narrative for the exhibition.
  • Synthesise analysis and outputs from other project teams.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the launch of the exhibition in August 2025.
Who will the volunteers be working with?
The Project Manager Shaan Knan (he/him); The Project Steering Committee; project partners (including Bishopsgate Institute; SocialBroadcasts; Islington Museum); other project volunteers.
Training
Further ‘hands-on’ training will be arranged via our project partners once the teams have been established (e.g. exhibition curation or podcast production).

Time commitment

Weekly progress is expected, but specific hours will be decided with volunteers. Students can be flexible with their hours around their studies. August 28th: Launch of physical exhibition at Islington Museum
