Club Kali Network - Where East Meets West Project
Our 'Where East Meets West' project documents and showcases the rich history of the Club Kali from its inception in 1995 to the present day.
Description

Club Kali, a historic safe space for the South Asian LGBTQ+ community, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of outputs including events, oral history interviews, a podcast series, archive creation and an exhibition at Islington Museum. These events honour the club’s role in fostering inclusion, resilience, and community over the decades.

We are seeking 3-4 students to undertake archival research in collaboration with the Bishopsgate Institute. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the largest LGBTQ+ archive in the UK and increase representation for the South Asian LGBTQ+ community in the archive. Students will be supported with archiving training, so they feel confident collecting and cataloguing materials.

Duties
  • Undertake archiving training on April 23rd.
  • Collect, sort and catalogue materials related to the South Asian LGBTQ+ community.
  • Work with the Bishopsgate Institute to add these materials to the existing archive.
  • Create a cohesive narrative from the materials.
  • Liaise with the Exhibition team to suggest archival materials for display.
Who will the volunteers be working with?
The Project Manager Shaan Knan (he/him); The Project Steering Committee; project partners (including Bishopsgate Institute; SocialBroadcasts; Islington Museum); other project volunteers.
Training
April 23rd (evening): Archive training at Bishopsgate Institute.

Further ‘hands-on’ training will be arranged via our project partners once the teams have been established (e.g. exhibition curation or podcast production).

Time commitment

Weekly progress is expected, but specific hours will be decided with volunteers. Students can be flexible with their hours around their studies. April 23rd: Archive training at Bishopgate Institute.
