What is climate justice?
Join Lisa Vanhala, a Professor of Political Science at UCL, as she explores the concept of climate justice and its importance in responding to the climate crisis. From addressing inequality in climate impacts, to amplifying marginalised voices, she underscores the importance of inclusive decision-making processes and the validation of diverse forms of knowledge.

Malte Jansen
Research Director, Centre for Net Zero Market Design, UCL | Dr. Malte Jansen is an interdisciplinary researcher at the intersection of energy markets, finance, and policy, with a focus on achieving net-zero emissions through innovative collaboration and effective communication. He is the Research Director at the Centre for Net Zero Market Design and a Principal Research Fellow at the University College London (UCL). Malte also is a Lecturer in Energy and Sustainability at the University of Sussex's Science and Policy Research Unit (SPRU), Malte has made significant contributions to academia, research, and consultancy in the renewable energy field. He holds an honorary visiting researcher position at Imperial College London and is a Special Consultant at the Technical University of Denmark. Malte holds a Doctoral Degree in Renewable Energy and Energy Economics, a Master of Engineering, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Energy and Environmental Management from the University of Flensburg. His academic and professional journey includes pivotal roles at Imperial College London, Fraunhofer IEE, ERM and the Technical University of Denmark. Malte has authored numerous high-impact journal articles, contributing valuable insights into the field of renewable energy. With an academic background in hydrology and hydrogeology he has over 35 years experience in the water sector. He has worked for a wide range of water sector bodies and has a wide network of high-level water contacts in the UK and globally. He works regularly with UK water companies both at practitioner and C-suite level. He has extensive understanding of water policy and regulation. As the founder of a tech accelerator and a PhD mentor, he has detailed knowledge of most aspects of water and wastewater technology. He has a lot of print, broadcast and social media experience and is often called upon to provide expert comment and opinion. He is founder of one of the new UK water companies and has direct experience of regulation and delivering water and wastewater services. He is co-founder of a water tech accelerator working with innovative start-up and scale-up water technology companies. He has also just jointly set up Thunderstorm a new concept in driving environmental improvement and engagement is sports and entertainment, by working with green NGOs, rights holders and sponsors. In addition, he works with a range of organisations on water issues and most of his current work involves advising on strategy and making connections that help companies build their reputation and create a wider water ecosystem around their services. One of his core skills is to able to produce relatable accessible content from complex data and concepts. Since joining WBCSD in September 2022, her role has focused on scaling strategic partnerships – with philanthropies, governments, civil society and academia – to advance collective business action on climate, nature and equity. Prior to joining WBCSD, Zemira’s sustainability experiences and internships focused largely on climate adaptation and resilience. Associate Professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University China-UK Low Carbon College | Dr. Cheng Tung Chong is an Associate Professor (tenured) at the China-UK Low Carbon College, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He holds a PhD degree (Engineering) from University of Cambridge, UK. His research focuses on the production and application of carbon-neutral fuels, thermochemical conversion technologies, and renewable energy systems. Partnerships Lead, Hackney Herbal | Winnie is a partnerships and sustainability specialist working at the intersection of regenerative business and community resilience. She currently leads revenue-generating partnerships at Hackney Herbal, helping the social enterprise become less reliant on grant funding while deepening its local impact in connecting people with nature. She also does freelance work on impact strategy and B Corp certification, supporting businesses in long-term regenerative practices. Maria Walawender
Research Fellow, UCL | Maria Walawender is a research fellow with the global team of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, based in the Institute of Global Health. In her role, she coordinates an interdisciplinary collaborative of over 100 researchers and experts at institutions around the world and co-leads the design, drafting, and editing of the group’s indicator report, published annually in the Lancet. She manages the data generated from over 50 indicators and manages the collaboration’s online data visualization platform. She also works closely with the Lancet Countdown’s regional centres in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Oceania, and SIDS. |

Harriet Waters
Director of Sustainability, UCL | Harriet is Director of Sustainability at UCL, a post she took up in February 2025 and will see her leading the implementation of the university's new sustainability plan which runs to 2035 and includes targets for net zero and biodiversity net gain. Harriet has worked in the environmental sustainability sector for over three decades, most recently setting Oxford University’s first sustainability strategy, the result of a wide collaboration between academics, senior management, practitioners and students. Under her leadership, the university set rigorous environmental standards for development projects, promoted the concept of a nature positive institution, implemented carbon reduction projects across the estate and identified sustainability content across the taught curriculum. Harriet’s ability to align sustainability with broader organisational objectives makes her an ideal fit for driving UCL’s ambitious sustainability agenda. Emilien Hoet
Strategy Director, LENs, 3Keel | Emilien is Strategy Director at Landscape Enterprise Networks (LENs), a programme that funds regenerative agriculture at scale, developed by sustainability consultancy, 3Keel. Xavier Brice
CEO, Sustrans | Ever since childhood Xavier has been fascinated by transport’s impact on society and our environment. He joined Sustrans – the UK’s sustainable transport charity – in June 2016 from Transport for London where he held a variety of roles, including leading the modernisation of London Underground’s stations, developing a new cycling strategy for the city and advisory positions in the Mayor’s office. Before this Xavier worked internationally as a strategy consultant across a range of sectors. Xavier was a member of the Department for Transport’s Net Zero Board, and a member of National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund Advisory Panel. He is an independent non-executive member of the Board of the Office of Rail & Road (the UK’s rail regulator and highways monitor). Annabel Hyde
Co-founder, Islington Climate Centre | Anna Hyde enjoyed a successful career as a sales and marketing director in music and entertainment publishing, working with top brands like Disney, Unilever, Nike, and Mumsnet. She was Marketing Director at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, collaborated on the first iTunes Festival, and programmed a Chemical Brothers gig for 9,000 people in Trafalgar Square. Whilst working in social media in 2016 she became a stalwart campaigner with Islington in Europe and Peoples vote In 2019, she shifted focus to climate and democracy activism. Deputy Programme Lead of Primary PGCE, IOE | Dr Tessa Willy is the Deputy Programme Lead on the Primary PGCE at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society and teaches geography on the foundation subject programme. She started her career teaching in secondary and then primary settings across the UK and in Malawi. Since moving into higher education, she has been Programme Lead for the Primary PGCE at the University of Roehampton and School Director of Teacher Education at Kingston University. Solutions Lead, GoUnpackaged | Megan joined the GoUnpackaged team late 2021 to support on a consulting project, and in March 2022 started as Programme Manager for The Refill Coalition Project - a complex programme, involving the management of a coalition of retailers, logistics companies and equipment manufacturers to design and launch brand new reuse and refill solutions. Megan is now the Solutions Lead, managing the pooling of the reusable packaging assets around the supply chain for the online solution, and with a focus on rolling out reuse and refill solutions more widely. |

Alice Chave
Co-founder, Incador | Alice is one of the founders of Incador, a fine jewellery brand built on responsible sourcing, with a strong focus on recycled gold. Specifically, Incador works with specialised recovery partners to extract gold from electronics, which is then refined to 18 carat and used in their organic fine jewellery designs. Alongside this, they are launching their Tech for Treasure campaign, beginning with a pilot in collaboration with UCL to make electronic recycling more accessible and to educate students on its wider applications. Ami McCarthy
Head of Politics, Greenpeace | Ami McCarthy is the Head of Politics at Greenpeace UK. In this position they provide political leadership for Greenpeace’s UK campaigns, building on the organisation’s unique ability to balance both ‘inside track’ and ‘outsider’ tactics and perspectives to achieve change. They have provided political leadership for the rollout of Greenpeace’s ‘big organising’ strategy, encouraging engagement with the political system at a grassroots level. She is currently working at Cool Earth, an international climate NGO that focuses on protecting rainforests by working alongside the local and Indigenous communities that call it home. |

Andrew Scott
Lecturer in Public Policy, UCL | Andrew Scott teaches public policy at the UCL Department of Political Science. He is interested in understanding the processes of policy change, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which it is influenced by factors such as lobbying, the media , public opinion and bureaucracy. This interest lies primarily in western democracies and international organisations and often with a focus on energy and environmental policy. Before coming to UCL in 2020, Andrew worked in policy and research roles at the UK Civil Service, Edinburgh Law School and the Law Society of Scotland. He obtained his doctorate, on the influence of public opinion and lobbying on the outcomes of drilling applications for shale gas and oil, from the University of Edinburgh. This was preceded by an LLB in Scots Law and an MSc in International Relations, both from the University of Glasgow. |

Elena Falco

He works as a consultant Intensivist in London & is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at UCL where he also directs the Centre for Human Health & Performance. He’s published >800 scientific research articles & has won >8 (inter)national awards. He chaired the two Lancet Commissions on Human Health & Climate Change, & now co-chairs the 47-country Lancet Countdown on Health & Climate Change. He’s written & lectured extensively on the subject; has briefed policymakers (inter)nationally; & co-leads the UCL MSc module on climate & health. He was appointed London Leader by Greater London Authority’s Sustainable Development Commission; has attended many of the international ‘COP’ negotiations; leads the children’s climate education ‘Project Genie’; & co-led the ITV documentary on Floods and Climate Change (2020). Senior Specialist, Clean Air Fund | Olivia Sweeney is Chemical Engineer by education and has worked extensively within a wide range of roles within the environmental sector. Having previously held roles within sustainable supply chain development, as well as waste and resource management she now works as a Senior Specialist for Clean Air Fund. Within this role, she supports and develops grants focussed on ensuring air quality data is globally ubiquitous, citizens understand the quality of the air that they breathe, and every policymaker has good enough data on which they make informed decisions. Her portfolio of grants focusses on the innovative and effective use of wearable sensors as both a data collection and engagement tool.She was named one of the Top 100 most Influential Women in Engineering by FT in 2019 and one of Rife Magazine’s 30 under 30 in 2022 and one of the University of Edinburgh's Climate 75 as well as Black Cultural Archives 40 X 40 Future Leaders. I’m passionate about the role of the food system, and Tesco as the UK’s largest retailer, in addressing two of the biggest challenges we face: human health and the health of our planet. My path into sustainability began working on climate change legislation in New Zealand, followed by an MSc in Global Food Security from the University of Edinburgh while working as the Climate Change Lead for a UK-based land management organisation. Robbie is a Senior Political Adviser at Uplift where he leads the Secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change supporting cross-party MPs and Peers in advancing a just transition away from oil and gas production, including working with parliamentarians to oppose new oil and gas developments. Fiona Jeffery OBE
Founder and Chairman, Just a Drop | Born in Scotland and a graduate of Edinburgh University, Fiona Jeffery has had a long and accomplished career working in the travel industry, responsible for World Travel Market (WTM) from 1986-2013 both as Managing Director and ultimately as Chairman. She created and launched a responsible tourism drive across the industry globally, World Responsible Tourism Day in association with the UNWTO, which is now the largest responsible tourism gathering across the world. And launched the very first Ministerial Summit bringing the public and private sectors together to debate, discuss and shape the industry. In 1998, as part of her sustainability drive, Fiona also founded and is Chair of the international water development charity Just a Drop, bringing sustainable safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to communities across Asia, Africa and Latin America, transforming lives. The organization supports 12 out of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and to date has worked in 32 countries and changed the lives of over 1.7 million people. Fiona, as a member of the UNWTO World Committee for Tourism Ethics successfully got agreement at the UN General Assembly to convert the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics into a legally binding Convention. A former Chair of WTTC’s Tourism for Tomorrow Programme and Chair of Africa Travel & Tourism Association she also sits on the Advisory Board for School of Hospitality and Tourism at Surrey University and is a Senior Partner for Finn Partners Global Sustainable Tourism PR Practice and Global Travel Recovery Network. She has lead the ITT Sustainability Committee for the last 18 months. In 2012, Fiona was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen for services to travel and tourism, and in 2013 received the TTG Contribution to Industry Award and the World Tourism Award for her philanthropic vision in creating Just a Drop. She was recognized in the Directory of Social Change Influencer Awards in 2015 and was inducted into the Global Travel and Hospitality Industry Hall of Fame in 2020. She has recently been awarded a Bronze Medal for Individual Leader of the Year from the Global Good Awards and Just a Drop was awarded the Pioneers Award from the Scientific Exploration Society, both in 2023. |

Senior Researcher, The Young Foundation | Leonie is a Senior Researcher who joined The Young Foundation in 2023, with a drive to amplify community-driven evidence as the foundation for social change. In her role, Leonie supports communities, organisations and policymakers to achieve this in their journey to low-carbon living as part of the just transition team. Before joining The Young Foundation, Leonie led programmes in Sierra Leone and Greece, working in partnership with communities whose experiences are often less heard, to understand the challenges they face and the solutions they would like to see. Anoushka Jain
Student, UCL and UKYCC Member | Anoushka’s climate activism began with her work with local women’s charities in New Delhi to campaign for a more just and equitable fashion industry, addressing its disproportionate impact on the Global South by collaborating with local communities and governments. Her focus on circular fashion led to her receiving the Coach Foundation Scholarship, which supports her work on building a circular fashion economy. Anoushka is also in the COP Working Group of the UK Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC), where she works on-ground on youth engagement at both local and international climate negotiations, including representing young people at COP29. At UCL, she leads a Changemakers X Grand Challenges climate education project, where she works across eight departments across the university to create climate education resources that are both innovative and actionable for students and communities. |

Stirling Spowers
Co-Founder & Regenerative Systems Explorer | Stirling is a serial social innovator exploring how business and technology might catalyse regenerative futures. Whilst at University, he co-founded two organisations. The first, a circular fungi-based food-tech start-up, was nominated for the Earthshot Award. The second has morphed into The Regenescape – a youth-led organisation building capacity in the next generation to ensure technology becomes a force of regeneration, not extraction. Alongside these ventures, Stirling has spent three years as a ‘Regenerative Systems Explorer’ at Volans, a boutique advisory firm at the bleeding edge of systems-change. |
Nnenna Belia Onwuka
Feminist Climate Advocate | Nnenna is passionate about the human impact of climate change and advancing feminist solutions. Her work lies at the intersection of human rights, gender equality, and climate justice, with a particular focus on climate education and the meaningful engagement of marginalised communities. She has advocated for girls’ education and feminist climate justice through roles at the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative and the Women’s Environmental Network and has researched the human rights implications of deforestation at Global Canopy. She holds an MSc in Human Rights, where her research focused on protecting Women Environmental and Human Rights Defenders through a decolonial feminist lens - an approach that continues to shape and guide all her work. |

Kristian Noll
Chair of the UN Earth Programme's Faith for Earth Youth Council | Kristian Noll is the Partnerships and Impact Coordinator at the LSE Religion and Global Society Unit, where he leads climate-focused knowledge exchange initiatives, working with diplomats, policymakers, and advocates. He is also Chair of the UNEP Faith for Earth Youth Council, spearheading global initiatives that integrate faith and environmental sustainability, and Co-Convenor of the Youth Forum for Faith and Ecology, a network of UK-based youth engaged in faith-based climate advocacy. Previously, he interned with MP Barry Gardiner, in the UK House of Commons and worked as an International Parliamentary Fellow with the Deutscher Bundestag. Kristian holds an MSc in Environmental Policy and Regulation from LSE and contributes regularly to public discourse through op-eds and podcasts. |

Poli Pencheva
Architect and Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation and Circular Economy Fellow, UCL | Poli has had a diverse career, with over 12 years of experience in the UK construction industry, during which she led the design and delivery of large regeneration projects in London. Her expertise is in data-driven design, sustainable design, policy and procurement practices. She has worked with both public and private sector organisations to develop and deliver on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) company and project strategies. In 2023, Poli stepped away from her senior management role in the private sector, to join UCL. She now leads the Net Zero What Works agenda which aims to boost interdisciplinary collaboration and coordination in addressing complex systems challenges. She is also part of the Plastic Waste Innovation Hub working at the intersection between climate change and circular economy. |

Amy Whight
Trustee, The Dixon Foundation | Amy Whight is a climate finance and sustainability strategist with 10 years of experience driving equitable climate solutions internationally within business and philanthropic organisations. Most recently, she served as the Head of Impact & Advocacy at Oxygen House Group to integrate environmental and social impact into business operations, establishing carbon accounting practices, Net Zero and Enhanced Biodiversity pathways, and B Corp certification. Amy is a Trustee at The Dixon Foundation where she designed and now supports the implementation of a £1m+ environmental funding portfolio, with a focus on the circular economy and regenerative food systems. Her approach is grounded in the belief that bold, collaborative finance can help unlock a just climate future. She holds BA in Spanish and Geography from Lancaster University, and an MA in International Studies and Diplomacy with Arabic from SOAS. |

Etienne Stott MBE
London 2012 gold medalist, campaigner and activist | Etienne Stott MBE, gold medalist from the London 2012 Olympics will share some perspectives from his journey towards Olympic success, through to harnessing the power of his sporting platform as a campaigner and activist. Tenacity, focus and resilience are vital in these times of environmental crisis and the mindset and values of sport can offer perspectives on how to address these challenges and communicate in a simple, human way. |

Em Fenton
Senior Director - Climate Diplomacy, Opportunity Green | Em (they/them) is the Senior Director – Climate Diplomacy at Opportunity Green, an environmental NGO that brings together legal, policy and analytical tools to tackle some of climate change’s more intractable challenges. As Senior Director for the Climate Diplomacy team they support Climate Vulnerable Countries to push for ambition in multilateral negotiations. Prior to joining Opportunity Green they led the Scottish Government’s International Climate Policy Team to oversee Scotland’s £36m Climate Justice Fund and deliver international advocacy on climate justice, especially action to address climate-induced loss and damage. |
