LGBTQ+ Officer

Who, What & Why?

Hiya everyone! I'm Joe, the LGBTQ+ Officer for the 2026/2027 Academic Year. A little about me: I'm a final-year Politics and International Relations student; I was elected to this role last March after previously serving as the network's welfare officer, where I campaigned against anti-Trans events and produced the LGBTQ+ Welfare Guide, for which I won the Officer Award for Outstanding Contribution.

Well enough about me. What do I do?

My Responsibilities

  • Representing LGBTQ+ students' interests at the Union Executive and all 3 Policy Zones and exercising my voting power to approve or disapprove of proposals. Including proposing policy.
  • Coordinate, run and chair the LGBTQ+ Forum: the meetings of the committee and the members where we will formulate policy, elect committee members, and hear from students.
  • Engage and collaborate with internal and external Union organisations, societies, charities, and clubs for members.
  • Plan, approve, and run social events with the social secretary for all members.
  • Provide advice and support to members, and assist them with needs under my purview.
  • etc.

Why do this?

Unfortunately, I cannot run again for this position next March. The position must go to a current student, and I will be graduating. But the reason I took on this role is because personally, I have known how it has felt before being LGBTQ+ and feeling alone. It is important to have these networks to provide a safe space and provide a platform to socialise with others who are experiencing the same problems as you do.

I am also passionate about driving change, and will do my best to ensure your interests are represented at the highest level in the Students' Union. I campaign for many issues, but I always keep them at heart, because without people fighting for others, who will fight for you?
