Purpose of the job

We currently have an exciting student staff opportunity available to work within Representation and Democracy Team as our Representation and Democracy Communications and Engagement Assistant. In this role, you will be supporting with administrative tasks related to the management of our representation, networks and democratic structures.

 

We are looking for someone who is organised, can manage their time well, work independently and who shows initiative. Previous experience working in an public or student-facing role is desirable. This position is a great opportunity for those who are interested in playing a role in supporting student representatives to thrive in improving the student experience. You will work within a supportive team environment and report to a member of permanent career staff within the Representation and Democracy Team. Enthusiasm, a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn are key to succeeding in the post.

Job description
  • To provide general administrative assistance to the Representation and Democracy Team.
  • To write newsletters for students and student leaders. 
  • To liaise with the Communications and Engagement Department regarding newsletters, blogs and social media as well as content creation. 
  • To update content on our website.
  • To encourage students to engage in our activities through stalls, talks and fairs.
  • Support the development of creative approaches to engaging students with democratic opportunities
  • To provide general administrative support as required.
  • To carry out work professionally and confidentially at all times.
  • To be a positive representative of the Students’ Union.
  • To maintain an awareness and observation of Health & Safety regulations.
  • To commit to reducing the Union’s environmental impact and promote environmental and ethical good practice in line with the Students’ Union policy.
  • To undertake such other duties within the general framework of the post as may from time to time be required.

Person Specification

 

Essential:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Previous experience of content creation either via social media, newsletters or blog posts.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative. 
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to multitask in order to meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm and positive attitude.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

 

Desirable:

  • A familiarity with Students’ Unions through student leadership, representation, volunteering, society committees or community involvement.

  • Experience of managing websites.

  • Previous knowledge of office systems and procedures.
