Students’ Union UCL Bars are looking to hire bar staff to take up an ongoing role at The Institute Bar and Kitchen for the new academic year and beyond. All applicants must fit the criteria outlined below and be available for the shifts and hours required.

Successful candidates must be available from week commencing 7th September. Induction and Training sessions are held Wednesday 9th September and Thursday 10th September. We will be unable to extend job offers to anyone unable to commit to at least one induction date.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties
- To serve and assist customers, ensuring that the highest level of customer service, including product knowledge, is always demonstrated.
- To ensure that the bar is kept clean, tidy, and well-stocked in accordance with the bar procedures.
- To prepare and serve various alcoholic and soft drinks to a high standard.
- To prepare food and maintain our kitchen to a high standard.
- To communicate effectively throughout your assigned shift and where otherwise necessary.
- To work mostly evening or day shifts as required, and to commit to working any day between Monday and Saturday (Sundays are rare but occasionally required).
- To uphold and abide by the four objectives of the Licensing Act, 2003: The prevention of crime and disorder; public safety; the prevention of public nuisance; the protection of children from harm.
Specific Duties
- To carry out general housekeeping duties including collecting and cleaning glassware, keeping fridges and shelves well stocked, wiping up spillages, rearranging furniture, removing rubbish.
- To assist in close-down procedures at the end of the day such as: cleaning the dishwasher, cleaning glass shelves, taking out rubbish etc.
Other duties
- To be a positive representative of Students Union UCL – able to signpost customers/fellow students to our other services.
- To commit to reducing Students Union UCL’s environmental impact and promote environmental and ethical good practice in line with Students Union UCL policy.
- To undertake such other duties within the general framework of the post as may be required.
- To carry out food service-related tasks, upholding food hygiene regulations and policy, this entails, but is not limited to the preparation and cooking of pizzas at The Institute Bar and Kitchen.
- To prepare hot drinks with our coffee machine where required using barista techniques to the highest standard.
- To execute quality classic cocktails, jugs and mocktails in accordance with our step-to-step cocktail guide.
- To complete the bars mandatory training within the given period.
Person Specification
- Currently registered as a UCL Student till end of Academic Year 2026/27
- Be a team player.
- Commitment to delivering highest standard of customer service.
- Ability to communicate effectively within a team whilst using your own initiative.
- Previous experience working in licenced bar is desirable but not essential.
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments.
- High level of enthusiasm and eager to perform duties.
- Ability to communicate well with customers who may be difficult.
- Ability to balance studies with work.
Other requirements:
Current student registered at UCL and will continue to be one until at least the summer of 2027.
Able to attend interviews and start work on the dates specified
Hours:
You will be expected to work when assigned on a rota basis in balance with your study commitments and availability within business operating hours Monday to Sunday, up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. Most shifts for this role are between Monday to Saturday between the hours of 4pm and 1am with flexible start times and limited number of lunch time shifts.
You are expected to be available throughout term time. Out-of-term work across Summer is available but determined at the line manager's discretion based on performance and business needs.
