Pi Media: Welfare Officer

Absolutely loved writing for Pi this year (as well as all the events - shout out Writers' Room) and so keen to get involved for next year! I'm aware I've got some very big shoes to fill but I'm hoping I can do the role justice!

I am standing for Welfare Officer because student media should be a space where creativity does not come at the expense of well-being. Through serving as Editor-in-Chief and Co-President in previous roles, I understand the pressure of deadlines and the reality of public scrutiny. I have worked within collaborative production processes where responsibility is shared and decisions result in consequences that have a visible impact. In that context, I strongly believe that welfare must be integrated into editorial practice and leadership oversight rather than added only when problems emerge.

My experience in public engagement and voluntary roles has required confidentiality, sensitivity, respectful and responsible communication. As someone who has supported peers in academic and pastoral contexts, I recognise the importance of creating structures that allow concerns to be raised safely and addressed promptly. I hold an Enhanced DBS and have completed safeguarding-related training, which has strengthened my awareness of professional boundaries. I would prioritise clear welfare signposting, transparent reporting pathways, and proactive check-ins during high-pressure periods. I would also work to ensure that editorial practices remain respectful and do not marginalise contributors.

A publication thrives when its contributors feel respected and heard. I would approach this role with discretion and a commitment to cultivating a supportive editorial culture.

I am applying for the position of Welfare Officer because I have been inspired. Last night, I attended the launch of Pi Media Magazine's 200th anniversary edition, and I was impressed by the sheer talent of the student body in creating such a beautiful publication. I was particularly struck by the diversity contributions from students of different backgrounds and circumstances, and how this led to such a balanced and reflective final piece. 

Throughout my first year at UCL, I have written several articles for Pi Media. I am passionate about the power of student media to uplift young voices, and at a time of upheaval and division, it would be an honour to contribute to a publication presenting these pressing narratives. I believe that Pi Media should reflect the strength in diversity we have at the university, and I am committed to ensuring that this continues. 

My interest in journalism began at school, where I regularly wrote for the newsletter and produced video journalism pieces. Last year, I was runner-up for The Guardian's Emerging Voices Award for my piece on the importance of transitional mental healthcare for adolescents. I also gained experience in interviewing and editing by creating a podcast for my EPQ, in which I spoke with FIFA's lead medical researcher.

Above all, I am excited by the opportunity to collaborate with other students on a publication we can all be proud of. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.
