Having first-hand exposure to the burden of cardiovascular disease in developing countries has long shaped my interest with cardiology as a department; the heart and its vascular circulation. Delayed diagnosis of my grandfather’s valvular dysfunction, prefaced the clinical consequences of impaired valvular haemodynamics aggravated by limited diagnostic capacity. Studying the physiology of stenotic and regurgitant lesions during the Circulation and Breathing module revealed to me that, while the heart functions as a pump at a superficial level, its performance is precisely governed by tightly regulated electrical, mechanical and haemodynamic processes.

In alignment with my passion for cardiology, I will be undertaking the Cardiovascular Science iBSc next year to explore this field with greater scientific rigour. The opportunity to serve as Chair of the Cardiology Society would therefore allow me to translate this academic interest into a more practical role, fostering a community of students and clinicians united by a shared curiosity for cardiovascular medicine. UCL’s diverse cohort makes the prospect of organising opportunities for students to engage with professionals, while encouraging discussion of emerging cardiovascular science, an endeavour I am particularly eager for.

My two years of experience being an academic representative as part of Rums Academic subcommittee I believe will also aid key leadership skills necessary to excel in this role.
