Debating Society: Vice President

When I joined UCL Debating Society, I wanted to do competitive debating, but I also wanted to do something more. I wanted to stand in a grand debating hall in black tie, debating a leading expert on a topic that genuinely matters. 

So many of us love debate not just for incentives and capacity and niche motions on niche issues, but because debate lets us grapple with real issues. Debate reminds us that we matter, that our ideas matter, that through conversation we can make the world a better place.

Many of us have watched videos of public debates at other UK universities. UCL students deserve that experience too.

Deliverables:

1. Bi-weekly public debates featuring major personalities
2.  Collaborations with other societies and universities
3.  Interesting formats: silly debates, controversial debates, students vs professors

The Impact

1. Inclusivity Many people aren’t ready to debate themselves but would still enjoy watching compelling arguments.
2. Equity Public debates open participation to more students, including underrepresented groups
3. Vibes Being part of a debating society should feel like you belong to something grand — a tradition where ideas matter. I’m going to bring that feeling back.

Why I’m qualified 

I’ve convened comps for UCL and led my school’s MUN team. I’m also a published writer who regularly engages with the ideas we debate.

But most importantly, over the past year I’ve grown to truly love the community that this society creates. I’m excited about all that we can achieve together :)
