Election post
Hello everyone! My name is Orlando, and I am a second year studying Classics. Over the course of my two years of being a Classics Society member, I have come to know many great and wonderful people from all years, both on the same course or those studying outside the department. And what has brought us together is our love of the ancient world. Indeed, attending many of the events this year, I have realised how important the Classics Society is in fostering those connections between members and providing a place to make friendships and meet new people.
One of the most important things I have learnt, being part of the committee this year, is the importance of including the members in decision making. Listening to what members want and would like to see more of is the crux of why I am running to be President. More often than not, it seemed as if decisions were merely being communicated, rather than asking you what you wanted to do. I want to take what went well and expand upon that, whilst taking in feedback. Granted, most decisions have to be made largely before the start of the next academic year, but if I am elected I would like to immediately start gathering ideas from current members and prospective members for the year ahead. For example, moving the toga party towards a warmer month, running more movie nights and more diversified events. After all, a society is not merely made up of its committee but its members!
Thank you for taking the time to read this :)
