Election post
I have had a blast being News & Investigations Editor and I’m excited to make an even ‘Grater’ contribution as Editor in Chief, building on the fantastic work our EICs have been doing this year.
Since I have joined The Cheese Grater, I have written 26 articles, becoming our resident Union Hack, covering everything from election scandals to failing bars. I have also delved into the world of investigative journalism, exposing issues ranging from harassment to data breaches.
This year, Go and I have created a strong format for our meetings, training new writers and improving the overall quality of writing. Our training sessions have covered a wide range of topics such as writing long form investigations, conducting interviews and sending FOI requests.
As EIC I would like to:
- Maintain a consistent news cycle - organising a weekly editorial meeting to send out right of replies to prevent backlogs.
- Enhance our digital format - introducing more video based content and live reporting of key events.
- Film segments of Grater Insight - I’m not suggesting TikTok-esque subway surfers edits, but it’ll help engage our Gen Z audience.
- Introduce more correspondent roles - encourage writers to develop expertise in areas they are passionate about.
Being part of this publication has been the highlight of my time at UCL, establishing myself as a writer, meeting some of my best mates and being part of a community. I am deeply committed to continuing this work.
