Biotechnology Society: General Secretary

Biotechnology is an incredibly broad and rapidly evolving field. However, for many students, especially first years, it can feel overwhelming. As General Secretary, I would aim to bridge this gap by making biotechnology more accessible, exciting, and relevant for students from the very start of university life.
One of my key priorities would be outreach to the incoming first year cohort. By actively promoting the society during welcome events, I hope to ensure that students are aware of the opportunities biotechnology offers. Early exposure can be crucial in shaping interests, and the society should play a central role in that journey.
This year, a major challenge faced by the society was limited engagement with events. To address this, I would aim to organise a balanced programme that combines academic content with relaxing social activities. Alongside talks from leading biotech industries and researchers, I would love to introduce more interactive experiences such as visits to biotechnology labs, museum trips to the Science or Natural History Museum, and sessions exploring the history of biotechnology. At the same time, fun socials such as sports events or a baking social focused on biotechnology in food (like fermentation or spherification) can help build a stronger sense of community.
I am very enthusiastic about contributing fresh ideas while collaborating with the committee to make the Biotechnology Society more engaging, inclusive, and impactful for all its members.
