On Tuesday 12 December, we had our third Union Executive meeting of the year. In this meeting, your elected student leaders consider your ideas that had been submitted and debated at our Policy Zones. Once a policy proposal or Amendment to Governing Documents (AGD) has been ratified by Union Executive, this will become policy and something that the Union actively works on.
And here’s what we talked about this week…
Amendments to Governing Documents
Members of Union Executive were asked to consider a Student Officer Review which had been undertaken by the Union. If you were not aware already, our Student Officers are all students just like you who represent the views of their respective groups to the Union. 100% of members voted to create the following new Networks:
- International Students’ Network
- Mature, Part-Time & Carers Student Network
- Research Students’ Network
- LGBTQ+ Network (Previously two separate Networks)
100% of members also voted to indicate that the Accommodation & Housing Officer and UCL East Students’ Officer will be reviewed at a later date.
In this AGD, members of Union Executive were asked to consider re-naming the current Union Affairs Officer to President. This vote passed with 77% of members voting in favour. As a consequence, Union Executive were then asked if they wanted to make this change immediately. 75% of members voted in favour, which means that the current Union Affairs Officer, Mary McHarg, is now your President! A new President will be elected in the 2024 Leadership Race.
Policy Proposals
This policy was discussed at Activities Zone and asks that the Union should invite media societies to all meetings that are open to students and they should also receive a copy of the agenda and subsequent minutes. This vote passed with 77% of members voting in favour.
This policy was discussed at Welfare & Community Zone and asks that Union bar staff complete Good Night Out training and accreditation to improve student and staff safety within the Union bars. This vote passed with 100% of members voting in favour.
Our next set of Policy Zones will take place in the new year. Do you have an idea that could improve life at UCL? You can submit it here.
