What is the Impartial Chairs programme?
Launched in 2023, the Impartial Chairs programme is a sector leading skills development programme run by Students’ Union UCL to create resilient and reflective student leaders.
In an increasingly polarised society where we are less likely to interact with people with differing views and perspectives, this programme has been designed to broaden students’ horizons, enabling them to navigate conflict and reflect on their own biases. Through experiential learning opportunities and a bespoke training programme, students can deepen their knowledge of division and conflict, develop their awareness of the complexities around navigating freedom of speech, build the skills needed to tackle difficult conversations, and enhance their facilitation and influencing skills.
The aim of the programme is to equip the next generation of leaders with the confidence and resilience to debate and discuss a range of topics in a respectful and sensitive way at UCL and beyond. Through this programme, Students’ Union UCL aims to increase the number of student-facilitated debates, contributing to a vibrant culture of dialogue and discourse at UCL. This programme forms part of, whilst also being distinct from, UCL’s Disagreeing Well campaign.
Programme overview
The programme consists of four bespoke, in-person training sessions and a fully funded five-day trip to Northern Ireland. These opportunities are run in partnership with several excellent training and experiential learning providers.
Debate Mate – Delivered by award-winning communication and leadership training professionals Debate Mate, this high-impact communication masterclass will equip you with essential skills for managing challenging debates and facilitating productive dialogue. You'll learn practical strategies for staying calm and composed during heated discussions, while developing the ability to communicate your own ideas with clarity and conviction. By the end of the session, you'll have a toolkit for reframing conflict as an opportunity for deeper understanding. Rather than viewing disagreements as battles to be won or focusing on finding a clear resolution where they may not be one, you'll learn to cultivate an environment where challenging ideas becomes a pathway to sharing perspectives.
Upskill 4 Life - This training consists of two workshops: ‘Empowering the Debate’ and ‘Enabling Safety’. These sessions are designed to equip you with the necessary tools to facilitate open, respectful debates and discussions in a safe environment that enables the exploration of diverse perspectives. You'll develop essential skills in active listening, critical thinking, and persuasive communication, while learning to approach disagreement as an opportunity for growth. With a focus on inclusive discussion, you'll explore how to voice your ideas assertively without overpowering others, fostering mutual respect in every exchange. These workshops will be delivered by Jonathan Day, Founder and Learning & Development Consultant at Up Skill 4 Life.
Active Bystander - This bespoke workshop will empower you to facilitate events with confidence, manage challenging conversations inclusively, and foster a safe and respectful environment for thought provoking discussions. This interactive workshop builds on the knowledge gained in the online module, guiding you through real life scenarios in debate settings where difficult situations may occur, and how you, as chair, can appropriately support and manage these situations. By completing the training, you’ll learn how to safely intervene as an active bystander and gain practical skills to challenge unacceptable behaviour.
Northern Ireland trip - Run in collaboration with the Center for International Experiential Learning, this trip offers a unique opportunity to explore the role of dialogue and conflict resolution in deeply divided societies. Through guided tours, interactive workshops, and conversations with local community leaders and peacebuilders, you’ll gain firsthand insight into the complexities of conflict and reconciliation. You’ll explore how conflict is resolved in real world settings and reflect on the skills required to facilitate respectful and inclusive dialogue. This immersive experiential learning experience will enhance your confidence in navigating difficult conversations as an Impartial Chair and beyond.
Funding
We are deeply grateful to the Pears Foundation for their generous support, which has enabled Students' Union UCL to significantly expand the number of students we can reach through the Impartial Chairs programme. This increase is instrumental in fostering a campus environment where robust and inclusive debate can take place, and where students have the skills and confidence to disagree well. We thank the Pears Foundation for supporting us to expand the co-curricular educational opportunities for UCL students.
Hiring an Impartial Chair
Students that have completed the programme can offer their services as chairs for events and debates. In the past, these have ranged from large, public events run by UCL faculty, to smaller events run by student societies. If you would like to hire an Impartial Chair to chair one of your events, please contact Freddie Gough, Freedom of Speech Compliance and Development Manager and Talia Bijwe-Alexander, Head of Intercultural Engagement.
How can I become an Impartial Chair?
Applications for the next cohort of Impartial Chairs will open in August 2025. The programme is heavily oversubscribed, so allow plenty of time to complete your application to avoid disappointment. Please check back here at a later date for more information.
