Students’ Union UCL are thrilled to announce a brand-new partnership with the Royal Opera House. As you may know, the Royal Opera House (ROH) is based in Covent Garden and is home to the world-famous Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet, who are renowned for outstanding performances of traditional opera & ballet, as well as commissioning new works.

What is the opportunity?

On Monday 15 January, we will be taking 20 UCL students backstage at the Royal Opera House for a morning of creative workshops and talks, based around Swan Lake, led by ROH professionals and practitioners. These include Kevin O’Hare, Director of the Royal Ballet Company, as well as Royal Ballet Company dancers and creatives. This will then be followed by a backstage tour of the Royal Opera House.

Over the following 3 weeks, led by a professional choreographer/practitioner, you will devise and rehearse a creative response piece based around Swan Lake, inspired by the talks and workshops. This piece will then be performed at UCL Dance Society’s Triple Bill Showcase.

Each member of the cohort will also have special access to a cheap ticket (between £1 and £30) to see the production of Swan Lake on Thursday 21st March 2024, as part of our Young ROH takeover partnership.

We think this is a really fantastic opportunity for students who are passionate about dance to go into the room where it happens at one of the most iconic and pioneering dance companies in the UK.

What is the commitment?

The workshop at the Royal Opera House will take place on Monday 15th January from 9:30am until 1:00pm.

After the workshop, there will be 3 weeks of rehearsals on UCL Campus, which will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 6:00pm – 7:30pm in the weeks commencing January 15th, January 22nd and January 29th (with an additional final rehearsal on Friday 2nd February.) The performance of the piece that devised will be at the UCL Dance Society’s Triple Bill Showcase.
