I am running for education officer because I'd like to continue sharing my enthusiasm for, and knowledge about sports metabolism with my peers. This academic year, I delivered a teaching series on nutritional interventions to maximise performance and prevent/treat injuries in sport, and received positive engagement and feedback with my content. Nutrition and metabolism, specifically in the context of sport, are something not touched upon in traditional medical school education. Although metabolic health is something we are taught about repeatedly, the nuances of how this can be manipulated in day-to-day life, be it an overweight individual or an elite athlete, is not discussed. Having taken a particular interest in exercise metabolism & sports nutrition in my bachelor's degree, I want to take the opportunity to apply my background in this field to help other medical students be better equipped in implementing prophylactic measures by targeting exercise and nutrition in their medical practise and their own lives.
If I am re-elected, I have plans to deliver another teaching series, diving into topics such as training techniques for specific goals (eg. hypertrophy, strength, endurance), discussing FAD diets, breaking down major food sources and how their macro- & micro-nutrient compositions affect health parameters (eg. cognitive, digestive, athletic), and addressing sarcopenia (its mechanism, and how to prevent/halt it from a metabolic perspective).
