Candidates

Mina Liu
Your voice, turned into action.
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I aim to turn research students’ ideas into action, not just corridor conversations. Research students can easily feel isolated: we are spread across departments and keep different hours. My three-step plan:

  1. Listen: run a survey or an informal town hall to find out what matters most.
  2. Act: build focused campaigns around shared priorities, raise wider issues with the Students’ Union and UCL where needed, and use Liberation Months to bring people together and raise awareness.
  3. Report back: share regular updates so everyone knows what we’re working on and how to get involved.
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a member of the Hsinchu City Youth Advisory Committee in Taiwan, I proposed period-friendly spaces and worked with the city to open nearly 60 spaces in a year. Turning ideas into policy taught me to develop practical proposals, understand different views, and coordinate resources. I also know how to lead a team and engage students: as president of my university’s Clinical Pharmacy Society, I led an anti-doping campaign that drew 180+ students. Having studied in Taiwan and Canada, I know how it feels to start over as an international researcher, and I want to make that easier for others.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I don’t just care about student issues; I have shown I can turn them into real change. On my city’s youth advisory committee, I made sure young people’s voices were heard and turned our proposals into policy. I will bring the same approach here: listen first, build campaigns around what research students need, and work with UCL to create lasting change. As a new research student myself, I share many of the experiences I will be campaigning on. If you vote for me, I will be there to listen and to make sure your voice helps shape a better research community for all of us.
