Candidates

Christopher Brocklebank (He/Him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I was previously the Lead Student representative to the maths department of which I was one of three Department Lead Reps who attended the faculty meetings, attended and co-chaired all of the Student Partnership Committees as well as effectively bringing a student voice to the departmental meetings, I have a track record of reliability. Other leadership experience includes sixth form council secretary , where my responsibilities included creating agendas, minutes, logs of issues and summary notes for the student body. In this position I bring reliability, organisation and accountability.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If I am elected I hope to bring two main goals to the Faculty. First, I wish for higher accountability and information available for reps and students. As a rep it was very difficult to track what was happening about issues raised and created difficulty feeding back to students. I will ensure that from a faculty level this feedback loop will be effectively closed as I assist lead reps. I would also bring in greater interdepartmental collaboration, as a faculty with such great intersection across departments, it seems a shame that students don’t have opportunities to meet other MAPS students.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me if they wish for a faculty rep that they will receive communications from. I will also strive enable departmental reps to be most efficient by working closely with Sarah, the education sabbatical officer. I aim to bring faculty events to the students of MAPS e.g. interdisciplinary talks, which will be dependent on departmental collaboration efforts and engagement, however this will open an opportunity for students to explore and discuss different pathways post university that has not been considered before.

Sabrina Devji (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I served as Head of House Captains, leading 24 peers and organising successful events that earned me Student of the Year and Most Valuable Pupil. As Head of Communications for the Aga Khan Youth & Sports Board’s 7–17 portfolio, I lead a team promoting national and global events. I have also just reached the interview stage for UCL’s Risk and Disaster Reduction Department Social Media Officer role. Qualities I prioritise are genuineness, integrity, drive and risk. I know my Department is responsible for mitigating risk, but sometimes it can be just the kick needed to make something a success!

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

As a Representative, I would aim to bring fresh perspective, opportunity, and intellectual stimulation to the MAPS Department, which is made up of a myriad of rockstars who are experts in their field. I want to instil a stronger relationship between these experts and First Year students, bridging any current fear that lies and transforming this into open dialogue, using me as a medium for those less willing to speak up. I also want to ensure the Department reflects today’s political, social, and economic realities in its teaching and culture, which it has begun to do incredibly well.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I may be new to UCL this year, but I am no stranger to leadership, integrity and representing students' voices. In voting for me, you will be voting for somebody who is genuine, honest, and  who truly wants members of the Department, both students and Tutors, to feel seen and heard. From pushing internships and career insights to the forefront of my priorities, I want to drive change whilst also preserving what is so wonderful about the Department,  bridging MAPS and its students to create a network like never before at UCL. With your support, I believe I can do so in this role.

Douglas Moody-Stuart (He/Him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I've worked as a first year departmental representative for the chemistry department for a year, providing experience gathering student opinions and suggesting solutions for problems such as accessibility of course selection, timetabling of lectures and labs and content feedback for first year modules such as CHEM0006 and BIOC0001. I am currently working as vice treasurer for the Chemical and Physical Society,  working in a team of 4 to handle society finances and managing schedules, as well as contacting outside organizations such as  SCI

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

One of the main things I think could be done at a faculty level, especially for one as widespread as MAPS is to spread awareness about how the hierarchy between faculty, department and student works. Often, students came to me with complaints that couldn't be handled on a departmental level due to the matter being centrally organised, such as exam and lecture timetabling. A clear guideline for who handles what and a pipeline for these suggestions would encourage student voices to speak up as well as reduce friction between students and their respective departments.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I'm good at intaking comments and suggestions from students and rethinking/rephrasing them in a light that is more easily tackled by administration. Often students will have nebulous ideas about general improvements that can be made to their experience at UCL and one of the most important parts of the process of student voice is taking those in and crystallizing them into real and achievable changes. I also believe strongly in promoting transparency with regard to issues that directly affect students,  providing reasoning for feedback given to suggestions, rather than an opaque yes or no.

Diya Doda (She / Her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Having led my school's largest STEM club, I am comfortable in leadership roles and am capable of bringing ideas to life. For example, I was in charge of organising interdisciplinary events, including a guest speaker series featuring biophysicists from CERN and AI experts from WIPO. Throughout this experience, I collaborated with industry experts, school faculty and students. This helped me develop strong communication, teamwork and organisational skills. My role also made me appreciate the value of bridging gaps between the different STEM fields and I hope to do the same for the MAPS students.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

As a first-year student, I’ve noticed how many new students feel unsure about where to ask questions or give feedback. As Faculty Rep, I want to work with the departmental reps to make the feedback systems simpler and more accessible, for example, by creating a MAPS-wide feedback forum so students feel heard and to create a sense of community. I’d also like to encourage more collaboration between the various departments through interdepartmental study sessions and mixers, helping students from different subjects connect, share ideas, and build stronger support systems.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Being both a first year and international student, I can relate to the struggles many of us face and I am determined to make it easier for everyone to reach out and find the support they need. I’m eager to make MAPS even more connected and welcoming to all. Through my previous leadership roles, I’ve developed a passion for organisation and a drive to turn ideas into action. To me, no idea is too ambitious, so as someone who loves working with people to find creative and effective solutions, I can’t wait to hear your ideas and work with you to make a real change across MAPS.

Sonia Khan
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I am fortunate to have direct faculty experience as a MAPS Digital Student Ambassador, where I’ve already worked closely with the department to represent the student voice, create content, and engage peers. This role gave me insight into how the faculty communicates and how to amplify student perspectives effectively. Pursuing a BSc in Global Humanitarian Studies has given me an inclusive perspective that values diverse student experiences and wellbeing. I want to ensure transparency by letting students know what is happening at the committee level and how it affects their education.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Build stronger communication channels between the faculty and students so concerns don’t just get raised, but visibly acted upon.
  • Create opportunities for underrepresented student voices to be heard, especially those who may not usually approach reps.
  • Strengthen collaboration between course reps, departmental reps, and faculty-level discussions to push for collective solutions (e.g., assessment policies, feedback quality, learning resources).
  • Promote a faculty culture where students feel their input is valued and impactful.
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I already know how the faculty operates, thanks to my role as a MAPS Digital Student Ambassador. This experience means I can start representing you effectively from day one. I’ll actively seek out your views and make sure they’re not only heard but translated into meaningful changes. I have a proven record of leadership, advocacy, and collaboration across both academic and extracurricular settings. I’ll keep communication open and transparent so you know what’s happening and how your voice is shaping decisions. I care deeply about making the MAPS student experience the best it can be.

Jack Liu (he/him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As an Earth Sciences student, I’m used to digging deep (literally and figuratively). I bring curiosity, organisation, and a knack for breaking down rocky problems into workable solutions. Friends say I’m approachable and down-to-earth, and I’ll always make time to listen. Bonus: I promise fewer geology puns in meetings… maybe.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I want to make sure student voices don’t get lost in the strata of bureaucracy. My goals are simple: clearer communication between faculty and students, more chances for collaboration across departments, and ensuring feedback actually shapes change. Above all, I’d like to build a stronger, more supportive community — with less pressure, more connection, and maybe the occasional rock pun to keep things light.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Why not?

Jinming Gu (Jenny)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Hi everyone! I’m Jenny, running for Student Union. From China, I speak Chinese & English fluently. I’ll promote math and our school well. Great at A-Level Math & Further Math, I get freshmen’s struggles and can give useful tips. Vote me—your approachable rep who listens and helps!

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Help more high school students understand this subject, including its professional content and course selection. Additionally, share with them the advantages of our school and experiences as an international student

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As an international student, I have unique perspectives and experiences that set me apart—and that’s a key reason I’m the right choice for the Student Union. This is my first time studying abroad long-term, so when it comes to sharing insights about being an international student here, I can offer genuine, firsthand advice that’s both relatable and useful.

Zainab Mahmood (She/Her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

At UCL, I serve on the committees of the Energy Society, UCL Science Magazine (Physics Editor), and the Film & TV Society (Co-Editor-in-Chief). These roles taught me to manage teams, gather perspectives, and put ideas into action. Beyond campus, I’ve built links in consulting, finance, energy, and sustainability, working on ESG reporting, direct air capture, and climate strategy. These experiences gave me the skills to turn student concerns into action. And if discussions get heated, I have five years of debate under my belt to win any argument on your behalf.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I will push for greater industry exposure through guest lectures, panels, and workshops, leveraging my own networks. I’ll advocate for sessions showing how physics and maths skills translate into policy, data science, climate tech, and finance. I’ll gather feedback from underrepresented groups to ensure all voices are heard, and lobby for alumni panels and employer networking. I’ll publish clear updates after committees and benchmark our support against top institutions to highlight best practices and drive improvement.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I am friendly but feisty, I know how to listen to people and help them be listened to. I bring proven leadership, industry links, and a commitment to making student voices count. Having experience on three UCL committees and professional work in various industries, I know how to communicate with people who have influence, and exercise my own influence in ensuring your feedback is acted on. I’ll push for better industry exposure, clearer communication, stronger career support, and more inclusive representation.

Sonia Marwaha (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

For years, I have seen decisions affecting students be made without adequate representation and thus consideration of our needs. In college, I was a prefect. As an avid protestor, I took direct action on behalf of students, gaining 200+ signatures on a petition that I took to the Headteacher. I am passionate about representation and unafraid to take initiative. This summer, I led young adults as a volunteer camp facilitator, and now as a transition mentor, I am guiding less experienced 1st years. I will openly listen and connect with my fellow students to make our voices heard, so vote for me!

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I will work to achieve the following (in order of priority):

  • Students get consistent communication and support from personal tutors
  • We are listened to if professors do not communicate or teach effectively
  • DAP glitches are dealt with, particularly for SoRA students
  • More exam preparation resources e.g answers to practice papers!

By discussing my 1st year experience with others, these are the main issues that come to light. I believe these are feasible goals that will enhance our academic experience! I aim to communicate with you, adapt and act accordingly as new issues arise.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Ultimately, I will represent those of us who have sent 10 emails to a personal tutor in vain, received a lower grade due to system glitches, or needed  subtitled videos - and even those who want to connect with their fellow students in the department more!

I am an experienced and enthusiastic communicator and will take your issues seriously. I've really enjoyed getting to know everyone so far, and will ensure even the quietest of us are heard with feedback forms, surveys and an open ear! I am passionate about change and will make the most of my role, by making sure you get the most out of it.

Molly Hanya (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As an academic representative in the previous academic year, I learnt a lot of valuable skills regarding what it takes to be a leader, voice my peers concerns and communicate with students and staff in the department to ensure the best student experience. Throughout this year, I was able to clarify exam conditions for one of our computing modules, report feedback from each term (collected via survey) in meetings with fellow reps and faculty members and set up a group chat to give the cohort a space to discuss the course as well as communicate with peers that they otherwise wouldn't have.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

My main goal as faculty rep is to build on what I learnt from last year, trying to provide as much as I can in the role for the benefits of the students and staff in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences faculty and  pass on my knowledge gained from experience in the academic rep role to new reps which I hope to have close communication with.  As a strong public speaker and highly organised person, I will do my best to pass on feedback to the right people with hopes of bringing positive change to the departments.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Those who know me will know I am a very confident and organised individual, I have taken on leadership roles in the physics department as well as in societies across UCL so I am keen to use my skill set to help others and strive improve the educational experience as much as I can with the help of the other reps and staff. I think I am very suited to this role and if elected you will see my commitment to doing the best job I can.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I will bring extensive experience in student representation and leadership. For the past three years, I have been a Chemistry Course Rep, actively gathering student feedback on modules and assessments and presenting it at the Department Student Partnership Committee, which I co-chaired for two terms. I have also held leadership roles in the UCL Fencing Society (Armourer) and the Chemical Physical Society (Catering Officer), strengthening my collaboration and organisational skills. These experiences equip me to ensure all MAPS students’ voices will be heard at faculty level.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I hope to, and I WILL,  ensure that the concern of every MAPS student feels is listened to and acted upon. I will work to strengthen communication between departments and the faculty, making sure feedback on teaching, assessments, and resources is represented clearly at committee level. I also aim to promote collaboration between student reps across departments, so that common issues can be addressed more efficiently.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I will bring strong communication, listening, and leadership skills to this role. Over the summer, I spent a month completing a Global Leadership Programme, which strengthened my ability to engage with different perspectives, work towards solutions, and adapt to new challenges. I am particularly interested in creating an inclusive environment where all students feel their views matter and can contribute to positive change. As approachable, reliable, and organised, I am committed to seeking out student views and ensuring they are heard within the MAPS faculty.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

What I hope to achieve in the role:

  • Ensure students’ feedback is listened to and acted on so their ideas lead to real improvements
  • Create opportunities for students to share opinions
  • Highlight changes that improve lectures, labs, and resources
  • Communicate successes clearly so students can see how their input has shaped positive change
  • Make sure all students feel confident their voices matter

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me because I have the experience and determination to make sure their voices lead to real change. I want to be a representative who not only raises concerns but follows them through until improvements are made. I believe in being approachable and transparent, so students always know what is happening and can see the results of their input. Most of all, I want to create a space where every student feels their contribution matters and makes a difference.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I was the Year 2 Academic Representative for my department last year, where I worked closely with students and staff to ensure feedback was listened to and acted upon. I regularly gathered opinions, raised issues at departmental meetings, and followed up on outcomes. I have numerous friends and contacts across the whole faculty (including stats, math, nat sci etc). I also attended the Annual Rep Conference, where I met representatives from across the university and took part in professionally led workshops that strengthened my communication, leadership, and problem solving skills.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I hope to build on my previous experience as an academic representative by continuing to improve communication between students and staff. I aim to address key issues such as timetabling and exam scheduling, as well as lecture and assessment formats. Having contributed to new teaching formats in the Physics department and the redevelopment of the Physics common room, I want to keep driving meaningful changes that enhance both learning and community within the faculty. I'd also love to help produce more faculty inspired merchandise to strengthen our connection to the faculty!

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I really enjoy talking to people and hearing new ideas or feedback, and I’d love to continue creating an open, friendly space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts. As an international student myself, I hope to represent and support others while also learning from domestic perspectives. With my past experience as an academic rep, I’m confident I can help improve communication, strengthen our community, and make Mathematical & Physical Sciences the best faculty at UCL!
