Candidates

Tasha Piyabongkarn
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I am proactive, open-minded, and committed to listening to and representing student voices to administrative and academic faculty. As exemplified by my role as the course representative for BSc Human Sciences last year, plus six years of experience on a student council, I take results-oriented action and value collaboration when gathering diverse, open-ended responses. Whether it was voicing my peers’ collective thoughts on modules’ schedules and assessments, or inducing lasting changes in our integrated MSci programme, I am a dependable advocate to get the changes we need made.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I will turn student feedback into results-oriented action, meaning that the thoughts, complaints, and suggestions you share with me will generate real change. To ensure effectiveness, I am waiting to hear from you to see where I should focus my efforts, but I believe various improvements can be made from everything such as timetabling, assessments, support, diversity, and module organization in our department. I’ll do this by effectively communicating to staff what we need as Faculty of Life Sciences students, and I am committed to gathering the voices of all programmes and backgrounds.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

If you want real change to your programme and modules, I’m prepared to commit myself to taking the persistent, effective action needed to change the minds of staff. I’m experienced in communicating effectively with staff to represent student interests and directly impact our experience, such as changes to assessments, programme structure, and supercurricular offerings. I also bring a background of diverse cultures, languages, sports, and music that allows me to connect to many life sciences students. Thank you for considering me to proactively improve your Faculty of Life Sciences experience.

Kenny Zhou
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Having served as an Academic Representative, I’ve developed strong communication and leadership skills through actively collecting feedback and collaborating with staff to implement improvements. I’m passionate about representing student voices fairly and efficiently, ensuring transparency and accountability in how decisions affect us.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I want to strengthen the connection between students and faculty by making feedback more action-oriented and visible from students. My goal is to ensure that every concern — whether academic or wellbeing-related — is acknowledged and addressed. I also hope to foster greater connection across departments within the Faculty of Life Sciences.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As I already had previous experiences in student representation, I understand how to turn feedback into real change. I’ll be a reliable voice for all Life Sciences students, ensuring issues are raised and resolved effectively. You can count on me to listen, communicate and represent our community with commitment and integrity.

Emily Yang
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As the 2024-25 Lead Academic Representative for Biomedical Sciences, I’ve chaired SPC meetings and liaised with the faculty, making me well-acquainted with this role’s responsibilities.

I’ve been very active in the life sciences community at UCL, being part of the committee of Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and MedTech Societies. I believe I’m a familiar face for life sciences students across all years, making me very approachable for help.

I have extensive leadership, communication and time-management skills from being president of 3 different societies at UCL and Chair of Student Council.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Create a centralised Google Form available on the group description of each course’s WhatsApp groupchat, so students can submit concerns anytime. This would be regularly checked and relayed to staff by the faculty’s academic reps

  • Organise faculty-wide events with department reps (e.g. expand the Life Sciences football match into a sports day)

  • Build a faculty alumni network and host networking events, connecting students to graduates for mentorship / career advice

  • Offer opportunities for those aiming nontraditional careers (e.g. consulting, policy, entrepreneurship) & careers outside of the UK
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I have experience as the Lead Academic Rep for Biomedical Sciences, and I believe that I’ve been a familiar face in the life sciences community, making me very approachable. I’m very organised and manage my time well too (I was in 5 different committees last year).

I promise to prioritise your needs throughout this academic year! Alongside addressing your concerns, I will focus on creating both social and career opportunities using departmental and societal collaborations and resources, ensuring a well-rounded university experience for everyone in the faculty.

Dharsika Thangeswaran (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I am a diligent, organised individual who likes to problem solve. I have experienced leadership and representative roles at my school and sixth form as part of school council and as a student ambassador. So, I am able to connect to and resonate with peers, whilst promoting student-staff discussion and engagement. I can speak to those above us in the educational hierarchy and bring tangible change and have participated in Debate Mate competitions, showing that I can easily convince others with logical arguments. This will help me discuss suggestions that students have, without causing offence.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Once elected, I hope it is easier for students of the life sciences to communicate with staff including lecturers and those creating course content, find support systems for their education and career, access training towards finding internships or placements, and and find a solution to any issues they may have to do with the course or teaching. I hope to bring a fresh viewpoint to discussions involving our study and collaborate with staff to ensure a streamlined and enjoyable approach to education. I hope to improve the student work-life balance and ensure academia remains stimulating.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I am dedicated to being a reliable and approachable Faculty Representative, ensuring that your voices are heard. I aim to communicate effectively between students and faculty, making sure that your concerns, feedback, and ideas are acted upon. I am also organised and dependable, committed to improving your academic experience. I will work to create a positive inclusive environment where no one is scared to voice their concerns and make sure everyone feels valued and important. Therefore, I believe that if you vote for me, you will be able to see a real difference in your academic lives.

Aleena Dudhra (She/Her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a former rep, I believe I am equipped for this role as I am able to actively listen to the student's concerns and effectively represent their academic interests to the faculty members. I am proactive and approachable and I have experience working collaboratively in group settings which has enhanced my ability to engage with both students and the staff.

I am committed to promoting the partnership between the staff and the students and my enthusiasm for improving the student experience will be the motivation for me to engage in meetings and contribute ideas that enhance teaching and learning.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I hope to strengthen communication between the staff, students and the Union so that the student voices are consistently heard and acted upon. I aim to ensure that the students feel comfortable and confident raising academic concerns and their feedback encourages positive changes within the faculty. This will help to create an environment where the staff and students can work together to address challenges and enhance education.

Ultimately, I hope to leave a lasting impact by ensuring that students' outlook remains the focal point in the decision-making process.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students should vote for me because I am approachable, reliable and committed to ensuring that every student's concerns are heard and acted upon. I will work hard to represent our faculty with fairness and dedication. I will be a dedicated and proactive representative striving to shape a better educational experience for our faculty.

Annie Ho (She/Her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I will bring strong commitment and enthusiasm for improving the student experience. As an open-minded and approachable representative, I will be a voice that students can trust to share their concerns. Having served as a student representative in the Student Partnership Committee last year, I gained valuable experience in listening to students, raising their concerns effectively and working with staff to find positive solutions — something I truly enjoyed and found rewarding.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

First and foremost, I want to ensure that students’ concerns and worries are brought forward to the faculty in order to better support learning and growth. I aim to strengthen communication between students and the faculty, improving transparency and understanding. In addition, I hope to advocate for better academic resources, more career guidance, and stronger well-being support. I will do my best to ensure that everyone feels supported in balancing their workload and mental health.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I am fully committed to listening actively to your concerns and making sure your ideas are not only heard but acted upon. My goal is to make the Faculty of Life Sciences a place where every student can learn, grow and thrive – both academically and personally.

Armana Hemmati (She/Her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As a Biochemistry representative and  ambassador I have developed my skills for bridging the gap between the faculty and my peers. As a student accomodation ambassador, I have represented UCL to new students whilst proactively addressing students' worries and communicating them with staff members.  Similarly, I inspire to represent the students of the Life Science faculty by taking initiative to interact with my peers and other representatives and create a transparent channel of communication between the student body and staff, with better education being the heart of this collaboration.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Improve the accessibility of science - are we getting graded based on our “clear understanding” of the content or our use of elitist language?
  • Providing informative feedback - why do most life sciences courses lack any feedback on essay drafts before submission?
  • The summer internship war: is there really nothing the faculty can do to help?
  • Addressing the lack of support for module selection.
  • Exploring the possibility of alternative modes of assessment and teaching.
  • We've lost mock exams, revision resources, practice papers etc: Why the loyalty to exams with the sacrifice of exam prep?
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Would you like your opinions to be listened to by the faculty and not lost in “feedback forums” at the end of the year? As a Biochemistry ambassador and representative I am familiar with the challenges we face and I am committed to the mission of making the Faculty Education Committee listen!

I am committed to the mission of creating a student experience that is shaped by our needs and interests rather than the unadjusted traditions.

Vote for me as your Life Sciences Faculty representative to make sure your feedback is heard and make way for improvement:)

Hamza Ahmed (He/Him)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I'm described by most of my friends (yes, I do have them) as talkative and approachable. These qualities will be foremost in my dealings with all students because I understand:

  1. not everyone is as comfortable to express their challenges as some - as the faculty rep, it is my responsibility to help you articulate issues, literally.
  2. not everyone is aware that the issues they face even stand as legitimate as the faculty rep, it is my responsibility to raise concerns to the faculty over material most of you are finding difficult to digest
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  1. Termly 'pulse-checks': these will be 'student-centred' meetings, together with your year-reps, to ensure everyone's opinions - informal and formal - are expressed. These won't be basic 'tELL mE aBoUT WhAt ProBLems YoU HaVe' but instead open-ended conversations where I try to understand everyone's circumstances to brainstorm potential improvements with everyone
  2. Monthly updates: so all of you can assess my performance and give me guidance (we're in this together!)
  3. 'Quick-wins' board: where I advertise tasks any person from any course can do to help out while also building up their own experience
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I realised last year that most of us, despite dreading long lectures and tough modules, actually do end up enjoying our course material by the end of the year when we study for it as a whole; the main reason why you should vote for me is because I want that enjoyment to come a whole lot sooner: enjoying our courses during the academic year, not at the end. This means both helping students out myself, but also raising issues to the faculty, on common problems like how to study for exams or tough course material. Having all of us enjoy our courses is, hence, the primary reason why I'm running.
