Having inadvertently become the grandfather of Student Media from my time as Kinesis Magazine President and Cheese Grater Trasurer, I have had the pleasure to contribute to Student Media across a variety of publications. For example, I had the pleasure of working with an amazing committee to deliver SPA Nominations and worked with SU members to expand training and accessibility to London's best publications. I did this to ensure the next generation of Journalists can feel at home. I have served and will continue to be of service to all student media society members.
- Ensure all media societies have access to essential rooms and, storage is clearly indicated.
- Training opportunities should be available to all students, not a select few and I will seek out speakers and support from the SU to teach skills every budding Journalist requires.
- I want to expand the scope of Student Media involvement in Zone Meetings and ensure any reporter can attend, not just Presidents and Treasurers receiving the online meeting link.
- Provide clearer guides for new publications to join and existing ones to access funds for printing and equipment.
Student Media has been a priviledge and an escape during my degree. It has given me the opportunity to stand up and show I care when others have failed in their roles. The previous rep who held this position undermined several publications, to the exstent of trying to fix elections when they would not follow their lead. I have stood firm, despite their best efforts. And, I will continue to do so through open communication, discussions and progress to ensure UCL can elevate all of their media societies on the national stage.
- I have been on the committee of The Cheese Grater for two years, having served as Editor-in-Chief last year. I have a track record of student media advocacy in this position, and I have opened lines of communication with the SU to achieve greater attention to our community already.
- I worked at the IOE over the Summer where I was researching the history of student life at UCL for the GenerationUCL project. I had a specific focus on student media whilst researching and I am confident that my work can be of substantive use in policy advocacy for the student media community if I were to be elected
In this role I wish to achieve:
- The implementation of cheaper printing options for all publications, be this bulk printing with the SU or a place on campus for publications to be printed
- Physical bins, like the ones for the Evening Standard, for the use of student publications
- Greater training and event opportunities for all media societies
- Greater coherence between media societies via coordination over socials and events hosted by the SU
- Greater spotlight in the Student Life Strategy on student media to facilitate equitable funding to our community as a means of facilitating regular student news
Reasons to vote for me:
- I am passionate about student media, having advocated in the past (through my role as EIC at The Cheese Grater and my work at the IOE) for policies to help our community
- I believe that a strong student media media presence is crucial to the health of our university's democracy, and I would continue to advocate for better funding for the media to keep institutional actors to account
- Student media is also essential to the creation of a vibrant and cohesive student community, and I would do all in my power to facilitate this
