I offer for the IOE faculty rep role: my prior experience as a Social Sciences course rep, my teamwork skills, and my active listening. Through course rep role, I've honed my skills in student representation, facilitating communication between students, reps and faculty staff – e.g., we improved a module’s assignment structure according to students’ needs. I aim to empower students by advocating for their needs and ideas, fostering a collaborative and inclusive academic community. Our goals will be shaped by your input and ideas!

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I would like to be the voice of change representing students in our faculty. As an ENFP, the so-called “happy puppy” among MBTI personality types, I am friendly and energetic with immense enthusiasm in connecting with others and envisioning new possibilities. I enjoy resolving any problems that any of you are experiencing to improve the quality of life at our faculty. I will try my best to be as responsive as I can. You could always come to me even just for a quick and informal chat!

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As an current Student Rep and a member of our student cohort, I would like to bridge the information gap between our faculty staff team and students. With open-mindedness, I am confident in a more inclusive faculty community with efforts from each and every one of us! If I’m fortunate enough to be a Faculty Rep, I promise my endeavour to make our faculty a warm family with an enhanced atmosphere. Whether you choose to vote for me or not, sincerely thanks for your attention :)

Cynthia Zhang (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I consider myself very fully competent for the role of faculty rep for my institution. Ever since primary school I started off from being the "head monitor" of the class, assisting teachers on engaging and communicating to the students. In high school, I further strengthened my leadership skills by being elected as the "international ambassador" of my school, a role of being the voice of all the international students. I perfectly fulfilled my duties during these experiences and was very much liked by other students.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

In this role, I aim to advocate for enhanced faculty development opportunities, streamline administrative processes, and create an environment where faculty concerns are promptly addressed. I believe students should vote for me because I am dedicated to making our institution more responsive to their needs and fostering an atmosphere of open dialogue. My goal is to ensure that their voices are heard, leading to a more enriching and harmonious learning experience for everyone. I want to make the lives of all the students easier and happier.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

With a strong passion for fostering positive academic environments and facilitating effective communication between faculty and administration, I believe I can be an invaluable advocate for our dedicated educators. My experience in committee leadership and my ability to empathetically listen to the concerns and ideas of my colleagues will enable me to bridge the gap between faculty and administration. As your Faculty Representative, I will bring a wealth of experience, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to open dialogue, all aimed at advancing our institution's shared goals.

I plan to set attainable student-centred goals, and be committed to seeing them through. I aim to amplify the benefits of the Assessment Hub, the product of our acclaimed ChangeMakers project, and equip every student in the faculty with invaluable resources to aid in deciphering assessment feedback constructively. I also envision a system allowing students to get swift answers to pressing questions without overburdening our respected lecturers. Lastly, I will champion for operational lifts at all times and the installation of coat hooks in teaching rooms. Let us refine our IOE experience.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

With a unique tenure as a course rep spanning three consecutive years, I've consistently amplified student voices. I played a role in pioneering the Assessment Hub, showcasing my commitment to enhancing learning experiences. As an international psychology student, I deeply understand the mental well-being challenges, particularly for our diverse international community. With clear, actionable plans, from enhancing student-staff interactions to advocating for everyday conveniences, I promise a brighter, inclusive IOE future.

Cadence Tay (she/her)
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I perceive this role to be of both gentle, and assertive service to all here at the IOE.

Gentle, refers to my cross-cultural communication skills, and empathetic nature. Having grown up across Singapore, China, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, and now in the UK, I deeply feel for and connect warmly with both international and local students.

Assertive, refers to my leadership skills and personal emphasis on accountability. In Japan, I led a local, community-based homelessness campaign. With my assertive nature, I believe I can best represent and advocate for all the voices of students here.

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I desire to foster comfortable, cross-cultural discussions at the IOE. Faced with unparalleled diversity of interaction here, I empathise with how it can be both daunting and beautiful. I strongly believe that all courses must be understood through specific, cultural contexts to apply them effectively.

I will also be most determined to listen attentively and gently to every student's thoughts and feelings towards distressing or encouraging issues. I will be able to then raise such feedback anonymously, collaborating to invoke an effective, inspiring learning environment for us all.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I would love for students here at the IOE to vote for me, as I first strongly believe that every individual has their own learning needs. I hope to build an inclusive, encouraging environment which caters to every students learning needs, none too small. Then, may we all work together to foster real change.

I will support all students in their ambitions, and their day-to-day struggles. I specifically understand how challenging adapting to a different environment can get at times. Being a warm individual, I hope to create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels that their voice matters.

Johnathan Chan (He/Him)

Hello IOE, my name is Johnathan. There are three experiences I will leverage as an IOE Rep:

  2. As the Director of UCLACS, I created partnerships with Cornell ABS and AIBC, increasing the offerings of the society
  3. As the founder of Hive Student Project, I lead 30 volunteers to assist over 100 Macanese students in university applications
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If elected, I aim to:

  1. Elevate the student experience: advocate for our own faculty common room (with student-voted amenities)
  2. Enhance resource accessibility: establish a comprehensive resource hub within our faculty, encompassing academic, extracurricular, and welfare resources
  3. Enhance Inter-Faculty Collaboration: foster inter-faculty partnerships, allowing IOE students to have access to a breadth of academic/career events
  4. Strengthen Communication: build accessible forums and digital platforms allowing IOE students to voice out their concerns
Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As a BSc Social Science with Data Science student, the IOE holds significant meaning to me. It's not just an institute, but a community that I deeply care about - encompassing the environment, the students, and the faculty. As such, I am running to become an IOE Rep where I can enhance the IOE experience for everyone, making it more enriching, inclusive, and empowering.
