Candidates

Sofia Buono
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

If I were to be elected as a student trustee representative, I hope to stimulate my drive toward innovation and change and thrive in an environment of people with an entrepreneurial mindset. I desire to pursue a career in Investment Banking and I believe that being the representative could allow me to apply my numerical skills to something real and relevant and deepen my knowledge about the management of the Union’s financial well-being, its strategic direction and legal compliance. The role would also stimulate my leadership skills by proposing my own visions for the Board of Trustees.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I could bring to this role precious transferable skills. For my bachelor’s degree, I have chosen an interdisciplinary course, which combines my passion for quantitative subjects which fuel my analytical thinking; and qualitative ones which stimulate my communication abilities and inquisitive mind. Having practiced competitive sports, I developed organizational and multi-tasking abilities, having to balance academics and my extracurriculars while desiring to excel in both, but also learned discipline, the concept of sacrifice, teamwork and leadership (I was the captain of my basketball team).

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I am a very committed and passionate individual. I was my school's student representative and led several projects such as "Our Food Habits,“ which examined my community’s food habits and its ethical choices and I organised my school's "Leadership Summit" on Social Corporate Responsibility. Furthermore, I strongly believe that our generation stands at a crossroad where concrete action is necessary to bring progress, and I hope to make students understand the importance of openness to change in today’s challenging commercial environment and how this can be implemented within our university.

Renato Corradini
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I wish that all students would believe in the union and trust it. We should be stronger with it behind our backs. If this is not the case for you, and think it is not supportive enough, or that it is working against you or your beliefs, then vote for me, we will talk and see what I can do to help you. It is us, the students, that the union is made of, so let there be a strong voice to help your opinions get through. University is a big part of our lives, so join me in the fight for doing things right. Tap 1st next to my name when voting.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

The past year I was a voting member of the Welfare and Community zone where I learned how the SU prioritises its work and builds new policies. In addition, to widen my knowledge on the behind the scenes, I volunteered to be the student member of the Risk and Audit Committee for the SU. I trust that these experiences will come to be useful if elected to represent the students again. Numerous friends also call me a life-saver as I am always available to go above and beyond to help in dire situations.

Three words to summarise what I bring to the role are: passion, creativity and enthusiasm.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Students have used these attributes to describe me:

  • Observant
  • Energetic
  • Bold
  • Optimistic

If you believe there to be a sizeable overlap between the traits above and that of a trustworthy representative then tap 1st next to Renato Corradini, when voting!

Maheem Imran
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I feel like this is a very big opportunity and I understand how big of an organisation the union is with a very big budget and I want to make sure the union uses this budget properly for its students. I feel like as a current student myself I can understand the situation of current UCL students better and hope to raise and vote to solve issues currently at UCL. I hope to make UCL spaces more comfortable for all students and I understand how students feel especially the international students. I know the board has the utmost authority so I think I can influence the most by sitting on the board.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Throughout high school I have participated in Model United Nations (MUN) conferences. I have been both a delegate and a chair and therefore have a lot of experience in conference voting and coming up with resolutions as a group.

Throughout my time at UCL, I have been on the committees of societies like Pakistan Society and Computer Science society and have had to make decisions for the betterment of the members while having a budget. This will help me as I have to do the same thing but at a much larger scale. I have seen my friends and seniors work on this board which has made me passionate.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

Being a Student Trustee at UCL means sitting on a board in the Students Union which takes all of the union's decisions. I know what a huge responsibility this is. This means sitting on the board that makes decisions affecting approximately 50,000 students and being part of the body that all of these students have put their trust in. I will make sure to forward the narrative of the students to the board and keep the students interest as my priority and will make sure that every decision favours UCL Students the most.

I am ready to give as much time as I can to this role so please vote for me.

Zikang Zhan
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

NOBODY KNOWS TRUSTEES BETTER THAN ME

Hello everyone. I’m Zikang, doing MEng Computer Science.

If I am elected,

  • Every decision made is based on the benefit and welfare of us UCL students, and stand on us students’ position.
  • Be a serious guardian to make the Union’s strategy on a correct direction, and treat every decision rigorously.
  • Be open to hear students’ voice 24/7, actively listen to their views and serve the needs of students.
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Through my past experiences, I’ve acquired skills on:

Debate - A member of debate group in school. I can make well thought out decisions at meetings, asking important and sometimes difficult questions, to scrutinise and to challenge.

Teamwork - Acted as a helmsman on a boat to steer the boat while directing the crew to operate.Always keep calm under stressful situations and navigate the boat in adverse circumstances.

Leadership - Led a math project for students worldwide. Through the coalition of creative ideas and manoeuvring differing opinions, our team successfully completed the project.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I’m not only a student trustee, but also a representative who speaks up for you and really can be trusted. Voting me is not a wrong choice.

Rachel T Lim
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Clearer communication. A week ago I had no idea that this existed and going into it I'm not quite sure what it entails. Clarifying and seeing what previous years have achieved to build on instead of restarting ideas would be great.

SU employees: Push for biweekly payment instead of monthly. Being an employee myself (come say hi @ Institute Bar!) it's frustrating to wait esp when ur broke.

More job opps: Talking to staff, I found out UCL outsources a lot of work that could be done by students and give us opportunities to meet other students e.g. event staffing/design.

Better hoodies.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Having been head of the student voice council and senior house captain, I have experience with project management to see projects through instead of stagnating, earning my council the principals recognition of "actually getting things done!". I learned that the best way to do everything was to be approachable, flexible, and if you want something, to push and annoy people for it until something gives way. I'll bring a "can do and will do" attitude to this role and personally I'd be great at this role as I'm genuinely frustrated at some of these things and would like to see it done!!!!!!

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

In secondary, my previous experience meant I was able to sit on the board of directors as a student representative just like this. This means that I'm used to this environment where establishments want to integrate younger voices but do it in a performative way where their voices may not change much, if at all, in the end. I may only have 12 months, but within this timeframe I'll not only achieve my aims but begin setting structures to ensure this role has a greater impact for the years after us.

Arsh Singh Bhasin
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Leading as Student Rep and as a member of various cultural, sporting and academic societies, for the past two years, has enabled me to develop strong relationships with students across departments. My strong work ethic and positive mindset are two major qualities I will bring to the post in order to strengthen the Student Unions reach. With a strong quantitative background and the desire to pursue a Master in Finance next year, I am well equipped to manage (accounts and financials) and recommend any adjustments to optimise the Students Union’s operations to enhance students opportunities.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I wish to act upon student requests I received during my time in previous leadership roles at UCL. For example advocating for greater collaboration with national and international Student Union’s through networking, social, sporting, academic events etc.

I also hope to achieve the organisation of an efficiently run ‘Awards Night’ termly, consisting of all clubs and societies, to celebrate student achievements. This will not only bring the community together, but also act as a tool to inspire (new) students to push themselves and grasp new opportunities.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As an enthusiast of the Students Union, I wish to improve the efficiency of operations to enhance students' experience in University. As an advocate for interactive communication - I hope to bridge the decision-making process between management and the student body. I hope to deliver on student concerns and suggestions in a timely manner. I will help to blend synergies of University and Union to enhance opportunities through resource diversification.

Sree Sanakkayala
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

Student societies are one of the first communities we join at UCL. From my experience in successfully running the UCL Engineering Society last year, I understand the needs of the common student. The next incremental steps to creating a more successful culture & community at UCL come from:

1. Increasing flexibility to student societies until legally possibly

2. Strengthening meaningful collaboration between UCL and SU to support students’ growth

3. Showcasing the other offerings of the SU (i.e. volunteering) that many students don’t fully know!

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

As the president of the UCL Engineering Society last year, I was able to:

1. increase membership from 585 to 883

2. establish a collaboration between 11 departmental societies (Engineering Coalition)

3. raise ~£30,000 to support students with professional, academic, and recreational events

4. win Departmental Society of the Year award and Gold Development award

As I was building a successful society, I realised that the SU is a bottleneck at times. Therefore, I plan to interweave my past experience and present learning to generate a fresh outlook on collaboration, innovation, and discovery.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

With my 6 years of experience working with non-profits (the SU is a charity!) and social enterprises (my startup GatherAid), I understand the intricacies of the forces acting on the SU. As a trustee, I believe I can leverage my entrepreneurial skills to establish a sustainable strategy to support more students than ever before.

Kairan Mai
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?
  • Contribute to the Union's charity goals and help enhance students' lives.
  • Maintain the Union's adherence to the organization's goal, vision and core principles while acting in compliance with its rules.
  • Help ensure the efficiency of the Union with my own knowledge and expertise
What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

I have spent many years helping people in need, working as a volunteer English teacher, Chinese-English translator and in other voluntary positions, and speaking up for them. I have developed strong organisational, planning and execution skills during this time. At the same time, I have empathy for others' experiences and sufferings. With the same enthusiasm, confidence and abilities required, I am here to fight for the future of our University and our Faculty.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

I will endeavour to participate actively on the Board of Trustees and do all I can for you.

Vote for me that fight for you. Vote for me for a brighter future.

Xin Huang
What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I promise that I will act in an honest and transparent manner throughout my work, ensuring that the Student Union operates efficiently according to regulations and develops in accordance with its values and goals, as well as being active and improving the lives of students.

The main problems for students are anxiety, financial issues, academic performance and socialising with people. I also found that women and Asian students are less likely to express their opinions overall. Through collaborating with the union and students, we can improve the welfare by helping with these issues.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

My leadership experience:  I was a class leader and the president of the student union in my junior high school. To date, I have founded and led 3 societies, one of which I started just last year, and have also led many projects. I deeply realise that honesty and trust, efficient management, operating under the rules, teamwork, active communication, as well as doing all the promised things on time are very difficult and important. I can promise that I can achieve all of these objectives based on my many years of learning from failure and success, leadership, and collaboration within a team.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

1.I am passionate about talking with and helping people. When people get better because of my assistance, it strengthens my goal to help as many people as possible.

2.I am positive, friendly, responsible, and always complete my work seriously. Despite being self-aware and enterprising, I also care a great deal about work efficiency, so I will make sure that everything I do is planned and completed efficiently and on time.

3.Having led and participated in many different projects and teams, I have gained extensive experience in decision-making, management, and teamwork.
