Election post
My hopes for my time as the BME Women Students’ Representative are:
- To make the women of color within the UCL community to feel more seen and more heard.
- Act as a bridge between the student population, the students union and the administration to most effectively address and fix any challenges faced by BME women.
- Introduce various events eg. Check in sessions and Career talks and Workshops through which women of color may access more opportunities and feel more included.
- Create an atmosphere in which BIPOC women can exist as their most vibrant, authentic and beautiful self's.
I have previously held positions of leadership which include student government deputy president, various sports teams captain and deputy head prefect. Through these various roles I learnt how to serve the student community, organize events, liaise with the administration and collaborate to bring about tangible change. Being a black woman and an international student as well I believe I have a unique perspective from which I can draw upon to effectively represent the women of color population of the UCL.
I understand how difficult it can be to exist in a world that is designed to make you feel unwanted. It is because of the many complexities we face that I believe that women of color need more care and attention with respect to the resources and opportunities given to them. I am ready and beyond willing to take those extra steps to make the women of color within UCL feel more accommodated. In my first year I longed to see more people that look like me in different leadership positions at UCL. This year I hope to be that representation, and most importantly to inspire others.
