Election post

What do you hope to achieve in the role if you are elected?

I’d use the POC network as a platform to facilitate more communication between students and committee members to foster a more active space. This includes liaising with other societies and faculties to strengthen our network and keep you regularly updated.

I'm hoping to develop more events that challenge persisting narratives about POC and instead celebrate our backgrounds e.g. creative workshops and outdoor persuits (think Black Girls Hike UK C.I.C)!

I’m also interested in shifting perceptions on race and class at UCL by doing more for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

What will you bring to this role (e.g. experience, skills or qualities)?

Being a student ambassador under the AWPO has made me more receptive to the needs of marginalised groups. I am also part of the UCL Student Success Panel where I have an active role in making UCL more inclusive, so I’m very open to using this role as POC network secretary to advocate for initiatives that address your specific concerns.

Please summarise why students should vote for you.

As an access student, I personally have felt pressure to assimilate into the exclusive culture of this institution which tends to reify our diverse backgrounds and overlook how our multiple identities converge.

If elected as secretary, I would strive to make space for students of colour by prioritising the increase of network visibility at SU meetings and beyond. This also means taking an intersectional approach to the role to hopefully build a more welcoming and community focussed UCL! :)
